Since loading games is mostly big sequential reads, doesn't this mean SSDs are useless for games?

I'm pretty sure SSD's are just so much faster than a regular HDD so that it doesn't matter.

SSDs have a similar problem, though. After only a few thousand rewrite cycles, the metastatic induction tremufams begin to lose their quantum electrodynamic stahility, which results in widespread degradation of the magnetic asynchronous modality that renders the drives faster in the first place. You really only want to write something to the drive once and never move it in order to get the best performance.

It's basically reversed. The SSD can access whatever section it needs to at all times, while the HDD has to physically rotate to be read by the laser so only one section of the disk can be touched on at a time.

I know a good bit about SSDs. The truth is that the performance of SSDs plummets once you write enough data to fill the drive once (even if you delete the data). Due to how SSDs work the drive will be constantly copying pages for erases after this, and will never perform like advertised again. In fact, this low performance level is around about the same as HDDs. You're basically paying a huge premium for about 256GB of good speeds. Do NOT buy SSDs in their current state.
>>
>>340051372
the ultraviolet laser idea is actually not new or anything.
There are some prototype ultraviolet laser discs that hold 400+GB of information.

Also, due to ultraviolet light properties, the discs can be laser etched to write data on them permanently.

No, because SSDs still blow spinning disks out of the water. I like having computers that boot up in seconds.
>>
>>340052657
In SSDs pages can't be written to before the block is erased, so if there are pages with alive data on a block that's going to be erased then they need to be copied away.

>>340052758

The image isn't true but HDDs will eventually be better anyway.

SDDs are dropping in price/GB but their performance isn't really increasing. With HDDs they just need to make technology that makes the round part spin faster and it will improve its performance.
>>
>>340058137

You can overclock your HDD to like 17,000 rpm. Your games run so fast that you can run Crysis at top settings on an integrated video card.

This is a /g/ meme

A hard disk has additional latency because of the time needed for the read/write heads to physically move to the correct sectors. A device with mechanical components is going to be slower than a device which operates entirely on electrical current.
>>
>>340059238

Nigga, what are you smoking?
>>

wrong. they are both O(1).

HDD = O(n+ c/rotational velocidensity)

>>340059047
That doesn't even make sense.
A typical HDD is spinning with 7200 rpm, so that means any data can be looked up in at most 8.33 ms. It could be regarded as constant time in terms of computational complexity, but I'm not sure why you would introduce this concept into the discussion when there isn't a parameter to adjust.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.
