As an American, living in Europe was the strangest thing. I can drive 30 minutes at home and maybe be halfway to the next town. I can drive 30 minutes in Germany and see 3-4 villages or be at another major city on the autobahn.
Other than the northeast, our states are the sizes of countries in Europe. Public transportation simply isn't viable in most cases.

I'd honestly say a car is a bigger priority OP, but if you want one that's worthwhile you;re going to either need to become a super autist master car nerd mechanic and willing to go through pain and suffering to restore or repair something, or the other route is to spend at least $5000 on something good that will last you and not become a major source of stress in your life.
