As much as I fucking love this series, was anyone else let down a bit by the sequel? One of my favorite things about Hotel Dusk was how this seemingly separate group of strangers were actually all connected, to Kyle and to each other. But 1/3 of Last Window's cast felt entirely irrelevant, and the mystery of what happened to Kyle's dad didn't grab me the way Bradley's story did.

Writing is only as good as it's effect on the reader or audience. This also takes into account whether or not the intended effect happens or not.
If something is meant to be serious, and comes off as comedic the writing has probably failed.
That being said the Japanese do have good writers; but I think too many Japanese, and writers in general, think they are going to create some epic capable of competing with other realms of fiction and end up creating something silly or contrived
