What's so difficult to grasp?
On one hand, he's saying that violence, in itself, isn't a sporting matter. You're not supposed to be proud of the violence you inflict upon others.
In the other instance, he's saying that as soldiers, as professionals, he had his job to do and so did the other person.
eehhh, when all things are brought to the table, MGS is generally a series about soldiers trying their best to be professionals but are constantly fucked by the very fact that human nature itself makes it very hard to be objective about violence, pain, and relationships.
