Honestly I think if they (2K) had put in more effort in marketing and promoting the game more would had bought/played it.
I didn't know about Battleborn till maybe a week before release, I've known about overwatch since the last E3.
It released at the same time as a virtually identical game from a significantly more popular dev. People that can only afford one are obviously going to buy Overwatch, they're obviously going to enjoy a Blizzard product, and they're obviously not going to want to buy something that's basically the same.
Whoever set the release date is a fucking idiot. If they delayed six months they'd probably have sold more copies.
