For the longest while a lot of people praised Quake 2 as the best single player Quake game, and Quake as a whole catches a lot of love because of Q3. A lot of people don't really mention Quake's single player but Q1 is probably my favorite shooter now.
Unreal was also really goddamn fun and that game really goes under the radar too. It's mostly Doom and Half Life as far as older single player shooters that catch praise go.
