Puyo Puyo Tetris IS the newest one. Yes, it's still played. The mechanics you must have heard about were introduced almost 15 years ago, and they don't take away anything from the game.

I played through Puyo Puyo Tetris on 3DS and had a blast. Any Tetris missions I stomped but I had to learn Puyo Puyo.
I really wish this game got an international release because it really deserves it, it's already the best Tetris title on the 3DS.

I couldn't consistently pull off chains longer than 4, so no not that well.
But well enough to 3-star every story mission.
It did feel like that the story missions were balanced for players from either franchise to manage them. I could usually meet the Puyo Puyo goals just about, but could easily exceed the Tetris goals by more than twice what they asked.

Mainly Japs. You can play ranked pretty much 24/7, but casual matches aren't as common except at certain times of the day.
