I think you can force it to download in the background if you initiate the download and then sign out of PSN, but not disconnect form the internet. You can play a single-player game and it should still download. I don't know if this works for all games.

That and you'd need 12GB of free space to install a 6GB game. Cause you need 6GB to download the file and then an additional 6GB to install it. You can delete the file once you're done installing. But unless you're able to free up enough space to, you're fucked.

The entire OP is taking grievance with how PSN works.
This entire problem, which is linked to the PS3's online capabilities, is inherently a PSN problem.
Except in the case of DLC stopping a download, which is the fault of the developer for making the DLC communicate online even when it isn't necessary (because reasons).
