They had to cut out a lot of stuff. Originally you were going to actually kill kain and activate a tower you see in the intro to kill the vampire race. They instead turned that area into Zephon's lair and cut out a whole area and a bunch of abilities amd rewrote the ending.
I think it's fascinating how the story if Soul Reaver 1, 2 and Defiance, as it is right now was not meant to be. Try to hink of any other developer who had to cut out content and came out with something so that expanded the whole story so well.
