Well, he basically fucked up everything. No idea why people think he was such a great protagonist. But its not really Cecil's fault in the long run. FFIV as a story is basically every bad cliche ever wrapped up into one game. From party members rushing to kill themselves to trap doors keeping you from getting the crystals to even a double double cross.
And people think FFVIII has a bad story? Holy fuck.
