Daisoujou wasnt the problem.
The problem was sacrifical fusion, since you could have any demon in your party while it not being underleveled.
Daisoujou being one of the few fiends that could be fused during full moon was the best fiend because of this.

I don't think the pseudos are really crutches. You usually get them so late an need to level them up so much that using them during the main game isn't very practical. I would consider the actual crutches in pokemon to be legendaries, stuff like gyarados, and arguably the starters.
