"We're going to send Phoenix to another country," is a cheesy way to say that their ideas had run dry.

I liked Mood Matrix a lot actually, way more than Percieve atleast. I had a few problems with the manner in which it was used though
1) General issue with DD but it's still relevant here - lack of penalties trivialised any potential sense of tension
2) Athena didn't follow her own rules about it that she laid out. It's established to be something they can use when witnesses start wigging out in a "therapy session". She then goes and uses it all the time even when there was no need for it.

After AJ it would've been awkward for Nick and Apollo to work together without referencing the past events of that game, but putting in this overly loud character attached to a huge plot that drives the game sneakily distracts the attention away from the loose threads of AJ. She didn't leave any room for those hanging threads to be explored/discussed/whatever.
In a way I find her character insulting. She gets black locks like Kristoph yet their meaning are tailored for her. Apollo's story ended up being more about his trust for her. Klavier turns up in 5-3, who are you playing as? Athena. Not Apollo - that way they dodge the problem of Apollo's inner monologue, which would obviously be expected to reference AJ. Her gimmick is completely overused and shoves Apollo's out of the way (and by extension, Phoenix's) to accommodate it.
It's downright annoying that she gets a major reference to AJ, despite not even being in AJ, and being one of the main reasons why nothing about AJ gets resolved at all. She was clearly created to paper over the cracks in the AA story. It's pretty telling that Athena is barely relevant in the new AA game at all. She's served her purpose.
