I used to use my mic all the time, now I never use it because it's better to be quiet on the mic so people can hear / concentrate. People shat on Splatoon for not having voice chat but I think it's one of the game's greatest assets. If it had voice chat the community would be like every other shitty online community; it would be a bunch of little kids, manchildren, and fucking Mexicans and black people trying to tell people what to do.

Yea this kinda weirds me out as well. I only played around 15 hours so far and all my friends are way above me so I queue solo most of the times. Only encountered someone using mic once. Was a Hanzo who used sonic arrow and told us what the enemy team comp was. Nothing else from him for the duration of the match.
I suck dick at talking and I'd much rather just type out since I rarely need to say anything on mic that my teammates aren't already doing

Difference is we actually do a lot of work and usually stay with the team and try to help them, I think it's a pretty telling sign that what we're doing is working when my pocket consistently gets 3+ gold medals, 60%+ kill participation, potg, etc. Pharah + Mercy combo too good.
The reason the Mic channels are so quiet is that when you group up with friends, you enter an exclusive voice channel of only your friends. You can change it but most people don't.
