Honest question for those with more knowledge or game building and coding.

Now with this assume graphics are on par with GTA5.

Now how much memory. Data and size would you need to make a game world as large as Earth.
>Full scale. Including mountains. Valleys. Hills. The ocean floor. Towns. Cities. Etc

>Full or near full detail. As in homes to walk in. Cars. People. Buildings to explore

>Load screens allowed.

Some retardedly huge number
>>

Mostly because of uncompressed .wav for sounds and 4096x4096 textures.
>>
At least multiple petabytes (1000TB) of data, unless you want a procedurally generated world or repeated assets out the fucking asshole to the point where it's utterly pointless and an exercise in frustration.

What makes you think anything other than a multiple-decade dev cycle with a team of hundreds of professional artists/coders/modelers could even begin to approach a game like that?

People don't know how much fucking work game development actually is, and how much work goes into creating worlds, let alone of any serious scale or meaningful detail.

Google MAPS is over 20 petabytes. You have no concept for how vast the earth really is.

More than your PC can handle.

Just outsource models to chinese/taiwanese/korean/vietnam 3dcg studios (naughty dog actually does this for generic props)

2.5 gb
>>
>>339955887
That's not a good comparison since video games are made differently. The assets that take most space in vidya are sounds, textures and video files. It doesnt help that modern devs are lazy fucks and dont bother with compression techniques anymore.
>>
An exabyte.

And probably more than 1000 years of work
>>
>>339955769
earth is 510 trillion meters squared in surface area. If you took even a moderate resolution picture of just the floor/ground of the entire earth you're looking at hundreds of petabytes just to start.
>>
>>339955734
Yeah and the hundreds of thousands of square miles of shit you have to design
>>
So is this overall impossible or just too time and work consuming

all 3

The GTA 5 map is approximately 100 square miles [1] and takes up about 65GB [2]

The earth is about 197 million square miles [3]. Basic math makes that 1.97 million times larger than the GTA map. Assuming the same quality levels across the world then the file size for the planet would be about 113.7 Pebibytes

This ignores that we could reuse textures for 6/7 of the earth as its ocean.

Also assumes that 100% of GTA5 file size was textures and models
>>
>>339958458
wouldn't it be reasonable to say that to add another 100 square miles it wouldn't take another 65 gigs to do it though?

a majority of that is music, textures and assets (that can be reused), and story audio/scripting
>>
>>339958893

I'd agree with that. I'm brute forcing it here. That file size is more the maximum than what I would expect.
>>
>>339955062
It's already impossible before you begin because there's no single hard drive out there big enough to hold petabytes worth of data, let alone a CPU and GPU powerful enough to process high quality assets and a game world the literal size of the Earth.
>>
just use this computer to do it

If assume adding the ability to go inside everywhere would raise the estimate by a lot
