Have bombs or a weapon that is good against crowds ready.
Strike damage type weapons(mace) are good against the big armored guys.
A bow is always handy.
Using burrs and elemental rings can give you a lot of elemental defence, which is good against certain bosses and enemies.

Most important tip is to ignore the memers claiming it's an awful game. It's a very good game, but not the best in the series. SotFS picks it up a lot. I personally enjoyed it more than DS and DS3. Buy lots of homeward bones and pay attention to your surroundings.

second, get agility to 105 (32 adp i think), so you'll have the same iframes as ds1
third, don't listen to all the memers out there, it might be the worst souls games but it's probably the best gameplaywise

Because of how slow the game plays, ultra weapons are incredibly strong. Greathammer 2H R2 pancakes nearly every regular enemy in the game, even the ones people constantly bitch about like the DLC ones, and Ultra Greatsword 2H R1s rip up bosses. The latter's 1H R1s also clear up all the hordes.

105 agility are a must (level adapability or adp to 32 if you dont touch att.)
pole weapons have sweetspots as most great and ultra great swords, so it is probably better to stick to smaller weapons.
Get a shield, games loses some of its bullshit.
try circling the enemies as they have bullshit tracking.
avoid masses and just run past most of them. there are no items worth getting after fighting gangbangs, so running past is viable.
dont use magic nor faith as you really need to know when and how to acquire the most spells.
dont summon npc's as they double the boss hp but dont do any damage.
ignore the flying faggot and just do other areas first.
reinforce your weapons but dont infuse.
maybe get the first healing miracle because you will be running low on estus.
have two weapons as most of the time smaller weapon will break.
coop to get enough souls and get more familiar with already beaten levels.

Honestly, the only problem I had with DaS2 was the way that Soul Memory completely failed to accomplish what it intended (preventing twinks from trolling the starting zones) while simultaneously breaking multiplayer.
If soul memory wasn't in the game, several other problems that spawned from that one mistake would never have happened. The part that really pisses me off is the way that there are several other systems that would have worked better, and you can figure that out if you give more than about 5 minutes of thought to the problem.

Level adaptability until you have 100-105 agility so your rolls actually work, parrying has a small delay before your parry frames start, you slide down ladders by holding B and holding the left stick down, you can also sprint on ladders and drink Estus
But most importantly, ignore whatever /v/ says about its quality, good or bad, and make up your own opinion once you're done with it.
It's not like DaS1 where you pick a weaponfu and she's your one and only for the entire game.
You got 6 weapon slots, upgrade materials out the wazoo, and plenty of stats to toss around. Use 'em. Almost every weapon is viable except for some of the obvious joke weapons like the ladle. Doesn't hurt to have a bit of magic or miracles either. Pyro and hexes take investment but are powerful.
DLC's much better than the base game.
