The problems in XII
>The party is ALL BORING
The only one that shows even a glimmer of character is Balthier and aside from one or two moments with his father all his moments consist of him conveying how little he gives a shit. Everyone else sucks. Ashe sucks, Basch sucks, Fran sucks, they all suck.

The combat just isn't exciting. It's dull. There's no oomph to anything. The main "fun" is in constructing gambit patterns and watching them pay off. I feel like what they tried to do in XIII was make it flashier, but at the same time removing the control of the gambits (ie: the only "fun" part of the combat in XII) just made it worse. Both games fail in the magic department. You just kinda shit out these little bubbles that spray fire or some such on the enemies. The only impressive spell in 12 was scathe.

The plot consists of running around like an idiot and never achieving anything. You achieve nothing before the end of the game at the pharos. And even then there's a giant plothole that invalidates it.

That's what I love so much about Dragon Quarter. BoF 1-4 were basically FF ripoffs. Good ones with some good characters and all, but they were pretty much bog-standard JRPGs.
Dragon Quarter was a deconstruction of its own series. "Oh, you can turn into a special dragon? Good job, it's killing you. If you abuse it like you have for the first four games, you get to start at the beginning."
That, and the fact it was basically a survival horror JRPG for the first few hours, until you got your skills and equipment to the right place where fights didn't scare you.
That, combined with the fucking EXQUISITE art design, just defines the game for me. Like, you could upres it to 1080p and it'd still look gorgeous thanks to the cel-shading and art direction.

Most likely. I've only ever played the PSX version, but I don't think they changed much in the remake. Other then make the character portraits uglier. If you're going to emulate you might as well play it in it's original format.

That's like saying The Hobbit is shit because the first edition had plotholes. Every remake and re-release of DQ1, simple port or remake or what have you, changes the numbers to fix the grind. FF1 holds up just fine, but nobody plays the NES version because that shit is bugged as fuck.

This one took me by suprise. I got it for my birthday and was put off by the gawd awful character designs, but once I got into the combat and found that I can tune party members to whatever I wanted them to do (effectively having them form roles, or "role-play"), I was hooked! The music wasn't bad either and having every convos in the game voice acted was a nice touch. Even the art grew onto me.

I remember trying to play this after covenant, and I couldn't finish it at all. Loved the atmosphere but the gameplay didn't age well at all. Then Played From the New World, and was a medicore experience overall. Love the stock system, but man did they screw up the atmosphere.
