I want to use one to play emulated N64 games, or should I get an actual N64 controller?

A USB N64 controller seems like the most obvious choice. Haven't used one myself though.

I think there are USB versions of NES, and SNES controllers too.

But imo, between those two, I'd play with a PS4 controller or a PS3 controller that emulates an Xbox controller. Or get a cheap Rock Candy USB XBox360 controller.

Idk man, do what you think is best. I'm done going full retard and not giving you a straight answer
>>
>>339913770
The Xbone controller is objectively better than the DS4. A 360 controller works just as well though, and they're pretty cheap nowadays.

The Xbox gamepad is designed for 3D gaming. The PlayStation gamepad is designed for 2D gaming. The N64 pad was designed for retardation. It doesn't matter what pad you use to emulate, it's going to feel awful no matter what.

The fact that there's sticks disagrees with this statement
>>
>>339913770
Stick with an xbone controller, mostly because you just plug in and play, and don't have to deal with 3rd party software or incorrect button prompts.

>>
>>339915648
Why though? The Xbone, DS4, and 360 controllers are all way better options. It makes absolutely no sense to buy one of these over any one of those.

Any good xbox controllers for PC that doesnt have the retarded stick placement?
I'd use DS4, but needing 3rd party programs or drivers is just irritating sometimes.
>>
>>339915648
It's shit.

It makes an annoying haptic feedback sound everytime you use the touchpad.
Its a pain in the ass getting non-steam games to work for it
And even when you do use steam games, it still only has "official" support for only a few of them.

Which pc games?
>>
>>339915648
They're a'ight. I like mine, but if you already have a 360/xbone/DS4 controller, dropping $50 on it probably isn't worth it.

Good: Great customization when it works, let's you play games that don't natively support controllers, very good browser controls, the extra 2 buttons from paddles can add a lot.

Bad: Trackpads are weird to get used to, doesn't like to work outside of steam, can sometimes cause glitches where the game isn't sure if it's controller or M+K input, no internal rechargable batteries.

Sticks were added to a controller designed for 2d gaming. I haven't held a DS4 yet, but I hated using a DS3 after using an Xbox controller. I think the stick/button placement of the Xbox controller is better for 3d than the Dual shock.
>>
>>339913770
The 360 controller is better since it has the analog stick in the correct placement for N64 emulation (N64 games barely ever make use of the D-pad FYI), but in either case you'll end up using the right analog stick for C-button input which isn't as precise and can cause issues in some games that uses C-buttons not just for camera control but also items like OoT and MM.
>>
>>339915861
For games that support controllers, the Xbox controller feels and controls better. The Steam controller was designed for games that don't work well with traditional controllers.
>>
>>339916280
Internal rechargable. I can just switch out rechargable AAs, yes, but I still have to switch them out. I can't charge them by playing plugged in.

>>339915887
>It makes an annoying haptic feedback sound everytime you use the touchpad.
You can disable that, though.
>>
>>339916428
I disagree. The Xbox One controller made improvements over the 360 controller. Like how the triggers are curved to feel more natural in your hand and the sticks feel better too.
>>
>>339916617
I think I used to map the face buttons to the C-buttons, and L1/R1 to A and B.

It's honestly the best solution, given how retarded the N64 controller was.
>>
>>339916407
Welcome
>>
>>339913770
Overall? The Xbone controller, but only slightly. The gap isn't nearly as large as it was last gen.
>>
N64 is fucking garbage, I don't know how I ever used it
>>
>>339913770
If you get the XBone, don't get the covert forces one. There's QC issues with that one in that most of them have a hard time reading inputs from the DPad.
>>
>>339915742
Golly idk. It's almost as if its selling point is being able to kick back and play PC shooters and shit...
>>
>>339919552
Well, if you wanted to be intentionally trash at an FPS, why not just an atari stick?
>>
>>339916501
>I haven't held a DS4 yet

what, you've never been to a best buy, gamestop, walmart, or anywhere else that has demo units? anyways the controller feels fine. it's actually slightly larger than the xbone controller.

as for stick placement, the whole "muh natural placement" was just spergs whose first console was an xbox and the idiots saying "my thumbs always hit each other" either don't have any fucking clue which part of the thumbs you're supposed to use on a thumbstick or they are seriously retarded enough to think that pointing the sticks towards each other is something you'd EVER do while playing a game naturally.
>>
xbone controller and the revised 360 controller are both really good for 3D games. In fact the xbone might be one of my favorite controllers ever.
>>
OP: when playing some emulated games on a PC, the xbone controller's triggers get fucked up in a way that prevents you from using both at once (like shielding while Z-targeting in OoT). This impairs gameplay in ocarina of time, mario kart, etc. However, you can circumvent this by using something like xpadder
>>
If you're literally just emulating, Wii classic controller is comfy as hell. Use the Touchmote driver, you need bluetooth.
>>
>>339921992
>not using LT for Z and RB for R
Do you even Nintendo 64
>>
>>339921516
In an fps that sure as fuck happens retard
>>
for what it's worth, the ds4 works straight out of the box (both wired and bluetooth) on mac; I have never gotten an xbone controller to work on mac at all even with the 360 drivers
>>
DS4 because you can have the touchpad as a mouse for when you play on TV and need it for windows menus.

The DS4 has an extra button over Xbone's controller, which is good to use as a 2x-speed or quicksave/quickload in emulated games, without potentially having to remove some other button in the games that use most of theml.

The touchpad can also be used as a notebook-style mouse cursor, which was useful when I was playing the TreeOfSavior beta, a game where it's much more comfy to play with the controller but you'd also want to use the mouse for some menus and chat.

The led, while gimmicky, can have its uses. You can assign colors, dim/saturation levels and patterns to various shit. I set mine to "wave" red when it's below 8% battery, green when it's recharging and "wave" green when it's above 90%. Then no light at all between the 8% and 80%

In the end what matters is comfort, so just pick the one you're most familiar with.
>>
As someone who owns and uses both, the DS4 wins due to the Xbone's bumpers being fucking retarded and only working from one side. Seriously, who's fucking idea was that?
