Any good reason you didn't play サクラノモリ†ドリーマーズ?
You like Persona 4, right?
I love videogames!

You should wait few years before you act all though, that unnatural Japanese is too striking.
Of course claiming other's Japanese is unnatural is way too generic of an insult and way too easy to use whenever, even when you yourself have no idea, but in your can it's obvious.
These negative questions poised like you did "日本語を習いません?" are normally used when you're inviting other people to do something, as in "Won't you [try] study[ing] Japanese?". You intent of course was "Why aren't you studying Japanese yet?" for which your sentence is painfully unfit.

It doesn't even take that long, providing that you are studying it diligently and sticking with it. A quick learner can get a pretty good grasp of the Kanji you'll see in games and comics in under a year. If you dick about it might take you much longer, don't build up barriers. Self sabotage is stupid.
I tried learning japanese a few years ago and crashed and burned mostly because I was barely trying.
I'm actually trying this time and I've memorized hiragana/katakana again. I'm going to pick up a genki textbook soon.
>>339911091
>the real world
I literally only use it for playing videogames and shitposting on 4chan. I think entertainment is a fair enough reason to learn a language; if you can find a more 'pratical' use for it, then its even better, but it certainly isn't necessary.
>>339911908
good for you for picking it back up again. there will always be frustrating periods while learning any language but if you keep at it you will see results.
How to you increase the amount of cards you want to study in aniki? I only get 100 cards and 20 news words to learn a day.

Thanks, anon! Back a while ago once I learning all the kana I pretty much just gave up when I realized how much progress I still had left to go.
Luckily I didn't completely forgot all the kana over the past few years, but I got a bit spotty on it so I'm just brushing up on it now.
Once I'm able to scrape together some money I'm going to buy the Genki I textbook. It seems people say that's a good place to start.

Step 1) Learn kana
Step 2) Learn grammar
Step 3) Learn vocab (also do this while learning grammar obviously)
Step 4) APPLICATION
Simply grinding Anki decks will do you NO good.
Read manga.
Play games.
Watch TV.
Listen to music.
USE the language.
This also helps you learn new words. Stick every new word you come across into Anki.

>>339908537
Personally, I just read through Genki I and II. I've got a bit of a knack for learning languages, so I absorbed most of it on the first run through.
If you feel like you need notes, take notes.
>>339913504
>>339909713
I'm learning because it's fun and I like the language.
Practically speaking, I will be able to use it for fun stuff like games, TV, manga, music, whatever.
But I'd also like to become a translator/localizer if at all possible.
I've done some shitty amateur translations of things here and there and I really enjoy the feeling of using this skill to share something to other people who would otherwise have to miss out.
>>339906612

>>339916583
Study the hiragana and katakana symbols. Memorize them.
After that probably buy one of those Genki textbooks. That's what I'm doing at least.
>>339908537
Do you have the CD audio files? Those are pretty helpful if you want to do more than just reading and writing

>>339919314

Is Amazon the cheapest website to get it new with the CD?
>>339919689
I'm an ausfag and I got it at a shop called kinokunya, and that was the cheapest price I could find (which added up to about 100 AU dollarydoos)

>>339916583
Everyone should take at least one class with a native speaker teacher. A bunch of people here will tell you they completely self-studied, but you'll notice their fundamentals are pretty bad in a way a native could easily point out. Also you'll be able to hear how a native person speaks, and you'll also probably be able to practice speaking with classmates.
>>339920186
Damn. I dont have any local shops like that sadly.
Ordering both the workbook and textbook off amazon is going to add up to around ~$80 USD I think. It's worth it though.
I have actually started to learn japanese this week and I got the kana memorized no problem and am now currently in the kanji grind.
If I can keep a good tempo with my learning, will I be able to reach a level where I can somewhat play Persona 5 now in September? I don't really care if it's going to be slow with me having to look up a lot of words, I just want to be able to get a good understanding of what's going on in the game.
>>339921706
You'll need to have some understanding of the grammatical structure. Memorising the kana and kanji won't really help you understand sentences
>>339921889
Of course, I'm planning to learn that alongside learning kanji
>>339907996
lol
>I'm going to learn a new language!

Wish I could be bothered to learn Japanese. I can't though; if I had the ability/motivation that would let me learn, I probably would be doing better things with my life and not just watching anime and playing videogames. And being on here.
How long will it take for me to learn enough Jap to be able to read DQX and DQXI no problem? I don't give a fuck about using it in any other way really besides being able to play a few Japan-only games no problem.

>>339922089
I hope he's okay
>>339923057
How come? If it follows the pattern from 3 and 4 the game will be like 95% text that you can advance through as slowly as you'd like. If I get a good grip on the grammar and take my time with each dialogue box shouldn't I be able to understand most of it?
>>339923872
You will probably not get a good enough grip on the grammar, and even if you do, you will almost certainly get frustrated and bored looking up as much vocab as you would have to.
>>339923872
You're giving yourself less than half a year to know a full language.
Life isn't like those "learn Japanese in 90 days" books.
Take your time. Relax.
>>339923872
It'll probably take you hours to understand a simple 10 minute scene. You'll have to look up all of the vocab, by either writing the kanji or finding it by radicals, and then you'll be stuck trying to understand a ton of grammar you probably haven't come across before. Even then you'll only get the basic gist of a sentence.
Persona is a really text heavy game, you'll probably get sick of trying to decipher it a few hours in.
>>339922208
why did i laugh
why
what have you done to me /v/ ?
>>339924579
Ah okay. I haven't dived to deep into learning the grammar yet but from what I've seen from some sentences I've encountered it doesn't feel like it should be THAT hard. I guess I'm wrong about that though.
>>339925050
>>339925359
I thought I would be able to learn a lot as I go through the game, as it's bound to have some repeating kanji and patterns I could pick up on, but I guess it's just going to be too overwhelming with everything new I have to learn?
>>339925713
Once you've got a handle on fundamental grammar it probably is best to just dive into something and wrangle with it until you get the hang of it, but don't underestimate the amount of kanji you'll be looking up.
>>339925713
You just won't have enough time from now to the release to know enough to decipher Japanese bullshit.
Give yourself a bit more time. Maybe half a year to a year. A language is tough shit, anon.
>>339925713
Yeah it'll be too overwhelming and you'll get burned out.
Persona 4's opening was over 2 hours of just just text and dialogue.
Start with something easier like a kid's manga.
>>339907996
>learning mandarin for a year
>start self teaching japanese
>kanji is ezpz
>actually havingfun
If you're having doubts you can just start jap and space it out or drop mandarin entirely if its really bothering you that much. there's diminishing returns the deeper you get and its fun to hop from one to the other if you want to pick up another language. your use of "validity" is kind of telling, just do what make you happy m8.
>>339925938
>>339925949
>>339926287
Aight, thanks for the input. I guess I will keep on grinding kanji and sentences until I feel confident I can make it through the game as a reasonable pace.
