ITT: Games that actually aged well
>>339896173
Are you asking for facts or opinions?
>>339896254
I'm asking for people to post older games that aged nicely and still play well without feeling dated (this mostly applies for 5th gen due to early control sticks).
That's not really up for debate since the Star Wars video games are mostly better than the movies they're based on.
>>339896397
Were there any good games based on Revenge of the Sith?
Any 2D game that had decent graphics, UI and controls back in the day still plays just as well by todays standards. But most early 3D games were lacking in one or more of these fields. Hell, some 3D games for just last gen are unplayable today (see Assassins Creed).
>>339896352
But the game OP posted plays like shit nowadays.
>>339896560
>not emulating it and playing with a 360 controller
fucking pleb, it plays better than F-Zero GX.
>>339896649
>360 controller
360's stick is even worse than N64's
>>339896397
>mostly
The movies are vastly inferior to the games. Disregarding recent ones (Battlefront [3], TOR, and FU2), almost every star wars game is enjoyable, some excellent. That's much more than I can say for them movies.

I'd rather use KB+M. I use Dxwnd so no problems for me.
>>339896779
bait
>>339896368
Do you think he got groomed and diddled as a kid?
Melee
>>339896560
it plays just fine
particularly if you had it on DC instead of the choppy as shit N64 version
>>339897053
Nice opinion, champz.
>>339896173
>>339897228
>The DC version factually performs better than the N64 version
>"nice opinion"
nintendrones everyone
>>339897256
Oh man I can't imagine what replaying this is like, it's already a fucking nightmare to emulate.
>>339897256
what an image, also no that game aged like shit.
>>339896925
no doubt
>>339897367
>it plays just fine
Nice opinion.
>>339897554
Is the PSP version worth playing?
>>339897591
nice argument
>>339896972
i'd say smash bros 64
>>339897437
>>339897448
Excuse me?
These graphics age like wine, they are more immersive than any game out today
>>339897857
>tfw used to spend a lot of time just exploring the outsides of the island
DK64 was super comfy
>>339897915
A TALE OF SOULS AND SWORDS
ETERNALLY RETOLD
DADANAAAAAAAAAA NANA NAAAAAAAAAAA
NANA NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>339897857
The graphics are fine but the frame rate is shit and the way the game handles lag is hilariously bad. Also it's glitchy as fuck and poorly designed.
>>339898067
I was always upset that there wasn't anything really to do in the post-game except explore.
If you manage to get 101%, the coolest thing you get is Krusha and that long credit secret video.
>>339898254
Is the Wii U port any good?
>>339897915
Its pretty easy for Soul Calibur to age well seeing as the game hasn't really changed since its first installment. I mean 5 came along and replaced all the characters you liked with shittier versions of those characters but still...
>>339897857
This post belongs in a youtube comment section
>>339897768
Thanks.
>>339898254
The character acceleration and clipping is a huge issue I must agree, but the framerate is no worse than OOT or any other big N64 title.
Poorly designed as far as collision goes, yes. The level design and other elements are enjoyable
>>339898514
pshhhhh whatever, kid
I'm only pretending to be retarded to trick you into replying >:) heh got you
>>339896173
I remember that game. You could pimp your racer, right? I think I picked Sebulba all the time because I could ram Anakin. His racer had some flames coming out to hurt bypassers, too. At least I think it did.
>>339898979
Yeah, it was hard as shit though. The most fun I remember having is exploding into a million pieces after ramming into a wall at 800Mph
>>339896516
The Revenge of the Sith movie game was actually pretty good
>>339899196
Fun as fuck and great story. Way too short though, really disappointing.
Also Paige/the kids should have stayed dead, it would have been a more emotional story piece.
episode 1 racer and diddy kong's racing are the only racing games I enjoy.
>>339896173
>>339899423
Diddy Kong Racing... I could never get into the slippery control style in comparison to all the other racers.
Also not a huge fan of the baby character design, honestly
>>339899529
It's aged pretty badly. It's still good, but DMC3 aged much better.
>>339899529
played this for the first time a few years ago and it sucked hard. don't even want to play another DMC game after that. not to mention DMC2 supposedly is even worse.
>>339898503
4 was slowed down and became unplayable, 2 was the peak, 3 was a replay of the 2nd, anything past the 3rd is bullshit tier
>>339896173
Age of Empire andprostagma?
>>339899529
>collect the orbs to unlock doors and be able to play the fucking game
No thanks.
>>339900618

Because sadly it doesn't have proper modern competition

>>339896173
Fantastic video game.
Was there a sequel, was it any good?
>>339902216
I don't think so unfortunately, it's a shame that pod-racing is pretty much dead at this point (along with Star Wars games).
Cryostasis
Mirror's Edge
>>339898086
YOU FUCKING WIZARD I WAS DOING THIS WELL BEFORE READING YOUR POST
say what you want about doom3, it still looks good
>>339901194
I've been playing Rogue Galaxy recently. It feels like a 2D copy of Freelancer. They even got the shitty voice acting and meaningless story correct!
How is it that after 13 years we still don't have a proper space game that will live up to Freelancer? Star Citizen won't be released for another 20 years because Chris Roberts takes forever to make games.
>>339902568
Its easy to look good when all you see is black the entire game.
>>339896516
The GBA movie game was awesome. 10/10.
>>339902816
b-but MEGATEXTURES anon...
>>339902714
I kinda liked Freelancer's story. Sure it was kinda weak, but honestly it's better to have one like this than nothing at all.
>>339898392
A little controller lag making some optional minigames almost impossible. But a good enough port to beat. I beat it the other day. Plus the save states make the game a little easier.
Ehhh, not really. I remember booting it up a few months ago. The controls felt.... nothing like I had remembered. They felt so clunky when turning your ship. I'm starting to think Nostalgia goggles really are a thing.
>>339900406
Empire Earth is pretty good too.
Earthbound
>>339896867
I want to add the PS1 Crash games to this. I still go back and play the main 3 Spyro and main 4 Crash games at least a few times a month
>>339898649
>but the framerate is no worse than OOT
But OoT has a good framerate and DK64 doesn't
>>339903612
>main 4 Crash games
You better be talking about CTR.
>>339899529
Playing it for the first time, it's not that bad actually. It's just that the RE camera sucks so much ass that it almost ruins the game. Almost.
The problem is that when you press R1 the challenge is over.
>>339900224
Only 3 is worth playing. 3 is amazing. Rest are meh.
>This thread
Goddamnit don't make me crack out the ps1 games, I need to study...
>>339903867
Yup. I love Bash too, but I don't really consider it a 'Crash' game. Plus it wasn't made by ND, so there is that too
>>339904009
PS1 games aged like shit though, even the "best" ones
>>339903845
I think OOT is a good example of a game that hasn't aged a day. Mechanically its still on par with games coming out today.
>>339902714
Elite Dangerous sorta has that vibe, but it gets boring fast. Also since it is technically an mmo (you can play alone if you want) it doesn't really have a real story.
>>339904140
That's Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver right?
Isn't it on Dreamcast?
>>339904317
It got ported onto Dreamcast but the PS1 version is the original
>>339904595
Can I just jump into the Dreamcast game without any knowledge of the series?
>>339896972
He ain't wrong
IMO, the mechanics are still solid and its still both incredibly fun and hard
it still looks pretty good too
>>339904657
Yes that's fine. You'll miss a bit of backstory but the game assumes you don't know that much of it anyway
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
What a game.
SUP, GUYS REMEMBER ME?
>>339902306
EA might make another pod racing game since they have the star wars vidya rights
>>339900618
I had this game, it wasn't too bad
Still impressed by it to this day.
>>339904261
my problem with the game is that there are a good number of things to do but none of them have enough depth to make them interesting to do continuously. there is a reason people play games like eurotruck when you can only do basically one thing
>spend hours getting timesplitters 2 flawlessly emulatable at 1080p, 60fps, never even slightly dips on my desktop in singleplayer
>go to play two player
>controllers work and everything, great, start up a game, holy fuck this is it, this is what it all comes down to
>get 5000 error codes
>every time
fuck everything
>>339896867
Take away emulators though and Spyro looks like shit. Emulators fix almost every goddamn problem plaguing the game on real hardware (except the shit camera of course).
>>339905173
>EA
I'd rather it just stay dead after they fucked up Battlefront
>>339904978
Why did you unearth this awful, repressed frustration anon?
>>339905912
I feel I had to post it, for reactions.
>>339896173
I replayed this shit recently and was disappointed at how piss easy it was. Controls, sound, music and all of that were on point, but it was a shame that you could practically lap everyone each race if you upgraded your racer regularly.
>>339905341
GTA IV is great as long as you don't have to control anyone on foot. Or in a vehicle.
>>339906383
Driving psychics were fun for me. And the foot shit was kind of annoying, but they fixed it with the other two characters.
It really never bothered me, even when I was unaware that everyone hated it.
>>339906531
GTA IV driving was weird in that it was fun to fuck around with but really shit when you just need to go from A to B.
>>339898392
>>339903284
It actually eliminates the lag and that's why the minigames are harder, the opening demo also desyncs too
>>339904691
Some GCN games hold up really well.
Ocarina, on the other hand, aged like milk.
>>339905598
Go into the settings and change the camera from 'passive' to 'active'
OP, do you mean visually or in terms of gameplay?
>>339896173
Literally the best racing game ever
I fucking love that game
>>339907190
More in the gameplay department, however it is always cool to see older titles that still look great today (there's one PS2 game that always gets posted here that I just forgot the name of).
>>339897256
>>339897554
That game wasn't good to begin with.
>>339902327
>Mirror's Edge
I love that game but it has some sections that are downright dreadful and it sucks how linear almost all of the game is. Runner vision is kinda shit, and some of the mechanics for some of the puzzles are a little too specific and not fun in execution. It feels good when you hit it but it's a bit convoluted and unintuitive in some places. And when they force you into combat it's just ass, speaking as someone who got Pacifist, especially when they claimed that you'd never have to fight anyone before the game came out -- oh look, some guy with a gun standing right in front of a door!
>Pilotwings 64
Literally the epitomy of comfy
>>339907924
>Medievil
>never good
Nigga I'll fight you
>>339907475
Generally speaking, games that don't go for a realistic style tend to hold up a hell of a lot better in the long run, like Wind Waker, or the PS2 Ratchet and Clank games.
>>339896173
who /gasgano/ here
REmake still looks glorious to this day. I'm too lazy to sort through the HD images and find the Gamecube version so just take my word for it.
>>339908280
Navior all the way for me. Sure he wasn't the fastest but holy shit his pod could turn on a dime.
>>339896173
I somehow find it hard to believe that episode 1 came out like 17 years ago now.
>>339903193
It was cheesy as fuck, but the good kind of cheesy.
>>339909491
Christ I was 7 when it came outI still think it's the most Star Wars feeling of the prequels even if it was retarded, I still have a soft spot for it from all the happy memories of childhood with it.
>>339908532
not really. prerendered doesn't count.
>>339909769
oh look who's all picky fucking choosy when it suits him
Deus ex
>tfw still find OOT and Wind Waker to be the best looking Zelda games
I just can't get into Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword
>>339902714
The fuck do you mean 2D? Do you mean Rebel Galaxy or are you trying to start shit with about a pretty good game?
Pic related
No seriously
> missions are almost completely liner corridors broken up by door breaches and planting bombs
> some of the areas (especially early game) make no sense at all ,
>the droid factory deep underground is actually only like 100 ft underground as shown by the end of that level
The characters and music saved it
>>339896173
Still king.
>>339909454
Bullseye was pretty much the best choice for every track, especially if you cheesed the game and did his race to unlock him first.
>Best handling
>Best acceleration
>Good top end speed -
The fastest drivers had shit handling and of course outside of the special circuit there are no real tracks that let you go full thrusters for extended periods
When maxed out you will lap every other racers in every other race with Bullseye. Its actually pretty retarded how good he is now that I think about it, since you can unlock him with Anakin 2seconds after turning on the game.
>>339899161
>Lengthy single-player mode with two playable characters who are similar but distinct
>Extra final boss and alternate ending where Anakin wins the final duel
>3D two-player arena fighter mode with all the other Sith/Jedi that showed up in the story being fully playable
More action games should be like this. For a rushed license game, that shit was incredible. That, and the LotR games, RotK especially.
>>339910741
Not that guy
I remember being able to cross the finish line before the Npcs got to the second map
I was a fan of the one pod with the circular cockpit ,can't remember the guy's name and Wan sandage
>>339897448
it was always shit.
>>339911119
Fuck I should sleep
I remember being able to finish the tatoine map before the Npcs got through their second lap
>>339909845
back off.
dunno if we're counting xbox games, but Chaos Theory
>still looks fucking good
>nice attention to detail in levels
>missions have multiple paths to take
>character controls are fluid, walking speed being bound to the mousewheel is great and that shit lacked hardcore in MGSV: Phantom Game
>separate co-op campaign and distinctive Spies vs. Mercenaries game mode
>story can still be appreciated, especially if you're into spy thrillers
>banter between Sam and the supporting cast is top tier
greatest stealth game of All Time
>>339911073
I never beat the RoTs game , had to return it to blockbuster , but I recall good memories
On that, why is every about RotS 8-10/10 besides the actually movie itself?
> the tie in games
> the Matthew stover novelization
> the cartoon leading up to it (despite it being samurai jack star wars )
>>339903407
did you forget to press [z] to drift?
>>339899529
tried to play it, but Devil May cry 3 my first dmc game didnt help at all.
I think in general any heavily stylized game looks great no matter its age. It's the ones that strive for realism that will inevitably be left behind when better graphical engines are developed.
>>339904140
>dat draw distance.
if the PC version didnt crashed like a motherfucker i would not consider playing it on PS1
>>339900406
Ugh. I wanna get AoM on Steam so badly, but all the reviews say it's basically garbage. Has anyone here played it?
>>339911336
>Spies vs Mercenary
please take me back to there, I miss good online like that
>>339908280
Until I got Sebulba. I usually jumped between Gasgano and Mars Guo.
Neva Kee was fast as fuck
Mained Anakin though, because I'm the guy who has to be P1 and Mario in every fucking game
>>339906670
This game still looks amazing. Rogue 3 is godly graphics wise. Just a shame they shoved in the garbage on foot stuff.
Why did Factor 5 have to go ;_;
Thief 2, but not Thief 1. If you play 2 then 1 back to back, the complete emptiness of everything becomes very obvious.
>>339911473
>the Matthew stover novelization
This was a great novel. It really elevates RotS from "the least shitty prequel" to "legitimately great piece of the Star Wars story."
I think og DOOM and most other sprite based fps hold up because sprites don't have that weird janky look that early 3D models had.
The biggest problem was that trees and shit were obviously 2D.
>>339912642
Mechanically, they both aged wonderfully... Not so much 3 though.
Thief 2 looks incredible at times though, even though it's not dynamic, how objects cast shadows looks wonderfully realistic. Real great art design.
>>339913781
>Mechanically, they both aged wonderfully
I'd disagree, because 2 has straight up improvements like letting you use the scroll mouse to use items.
Or having a servant's quarters with more than just a bed and a torch.
>>339913857
Oh yeah, 2 was a massive improvement, easily the best one, but having played them through from 1 to 3 when I bought the trilogy back in 2012, I found them both to be very easy to enjoy.
>Or having a servant's quarters with more than just a bed and a torch.
Yeah, things were definitely more spacious in tdp, still aged well though imo.
this was released 22 years ago and still looks amazing
>>339913781
A friend of mine who lists Deadly Shadows as one of his top five games on his steam profile said to me that the first two Thief games were too archaic for him.
I just don't get it. 3 was a cheap, watered down xbox game and it shows.
perfect dark is still the best shooter ever made
xbl arcade rerelease is game of the decade
>>339912098
Its literally AoM but with working multiplayer if you dont have the original keys.
Downsides are the new lighting and texture systems werent well done, and its pretty buggy from time to time, and the new xpac is really awful and a lot of it seems like reskins of existing units.
