Can we all agree on HUDs being one of the worst things in video games?
>Hey look, we have a visual, dynamic, real-time medium on our hands
>Let's throw a Health and Mana bar up in the right corner
As always, op is a faggot, but thanks for posting the image, i was looking for it
Can we all agree on controllers being one of the worst things in video games?
>Hey look, we have the computing power to simulate entire worlds and tell emergent interactive stories limited only by our imagination
>Let's have the player interact with all this using only two sticks and about a dozen buttons
>>339896010
So are you saying health bars aren't visual, dynamic, or real-time?
>>339896010
Is this a Battleborn thread?
>>339896912
I'm saying everything is not Resident Evil.
>>339896010
worst part is quest markers and hints
the coolest thing about morrowind was reading signposts and actually reading dialogue and figuring out what to do
newer game quests are boring as shit
in-game navigation is good in general
>>339896010
Devs have tried for 30 years to make vidya that doesn't need health bars. It always sucks, man. Always. Unless you're doing some artsy fartsy indie game, you need those bars or blood effects to know when you're about to die in hectic situations.
>>339897373
Exception: dead space
>>339897068
There's Mana in Resident Evil?
>>339897459
This. I wish every game went the Dead Space route and created an intelligent, minimalistic HUD. Sadly devs are lazy as absolute fuck.
>>339897459
>dead space's hud
>>339897919
You do realize that not every game is suited to that design right?
How exactly am I supposed to to know how much health and armor I have in a fast paced action FPS like DooM if I don't have any numbers or bars to tell me?
When devs try and get rid of the hud, you usually end up with stupid shit like in Jurassic Park: Trespasser. Where you can look down at your tits and see a heart tattoo, which is actually your health meter.
>>339898430
>stupid
But anon, that's awesome.
>>339898501
Try playing it
>>339898501
In concept it's cool, just like everything in Trespasser. In execution, it's a fucking nightmare. Again, like everything in Trespasser.
Have a super comfy Let's Play on it:
http://youtu.be/LDK6Q2v8HPg
Fair warning, it is excessively comfy.
>>339897459
This, it was pretty clever.
>>339896010
>Wanting to have to fucking guess how much HP you have based on retarded red blood filters on the screen or similar
No, you are the faggot.
>>339898995
man, back when people put effort into let's plays.
>>339899307
Can you name some LPs with effort?
>>339899472
Not him but the Wizardry 4 LP from SA. It's text only but it highlights how bullshit the game is perfectly.
>>339898262
Simple: You don't.
You go full Contra and make it one hit, one kill. Don't get hit and you don't die.
>>339899472
Almost all of the old SomethingAwful Let's Plays were fantastic, informative, and comfy. Research Indicates being a prime example. Shame the site went to shit.
>>339899472
SA's FFVIII LP. Pictures/text only, but my god, it is hysterical.
>>339897459
Dead Space was one of the best examples of using in game stuff to indicate certain statuses, and did it in the way where it was kept front and center without obscuring the rest of the action.
Like most games try to put more status indicators and stuff in the environment (ie Conviction draining color when in the dark), but then they mix it with HUD elements.
Really wish more games would take time with their games to try and come up with a way to display in game info without a HUD, or with a minimalist HUD
>>339897459
>still my favorite HUD of all time
>8 years and nothing to surpass it
>>339899672
>Everyone should use this shitty idea that worked in one game!
>How would you make an XY and Z style game then?
>You can't!
ok
>>339897084
You can Mod Skyrim to eliminate quest markers/the compass. There's also a mod that makes quest journal descriptions more descriptive so you can find quest objectives easier without a compass/icon.
HUDs add to the game sometimes
>>339899672
yeah, i love getting one shotted by chaingunners in doom
>>339898995
If there's one thing I've noticed about SA LPers, its that they rarely, if ever, upload their videos to YouTube. This always struck me as a 'special snowflake' move, to show how contrarian they are from everyone else.
>>339899796
>no other games do it
>dead space 2 and 3 are massively shit
for what purpoae
Certain things like Mana could be hard to determine without a bar.
Let's say that using mana makes you feel different like if your tired. How are you suppose to let players know they are low on mana, without confusing it with being low on stamina or health?
Post the one with the Battleborn comparison
please
>>339900227
>dead space 2
>shit
>>339900227
Dead Space 2 was pretty ok
>>339900112
Their LPs started before youtube existed, so for the older ones it makes sense, and maybe the new ones are just following tradition? I haven't watched a SA LP in years though, and I've heard it's turned into a SJW shithole, so it could just as likely be they are indeed special snowflakes.
>>339900227
Dead Space 2 was ok, it had some fuck ups (namely repeating the same spaces and areas over and over), but the fact that you can play the whole game from beginning to end without a loading screen in sight (if you don't die or quit in the middle) was pretty amazing.
Still, loved DS1 better cause the Ishimura felt better designed and established
>>339900334
>>339900385
It wasn't as bad as 3, but come on, it doesn't even hold a candle to the first game.
>>339896010
>>339896010
which version of dark souls is your image, OP?
>>339900563
That can't be real
>>339900282
Just don't have mana in your game, obviously
>>339896723
Can we all agree on steering being the worst thing about cars?
>Hey look, we made a vehicle that can travel great distances in a short period of time and navigate 3 dimensional space.
>Let's have the driver interact with all this using a wheel that turns left and right.
>>339900520
i disagree but it's your opinion and taste, not mine so that's alright
>>339900563
>this is the real, actual HUD of a modern day video game
Honestly, OP's looks more appealing. I can actually make out most of what's going on. I can't make anything out in that image, with all the bright colors and shit.
>>339900664
Its really cherry picked to show off the worst possible moment.
Not that Battleborn doesn't have HUD issues though. Massive gun models and shit tons of particle effects do make it hard to see.
>>339900664
behold the glory of battleborn
>>339900282
Spells get weaker, take longer to cast, then you just start not being able to cast all together.
>>339900878
You know what? No. It's not alright. I haven't played it since release, and I think I may be letting zealotry override my judgement. I'm going to replay one and two right now. Three is still objectively shit though, so I'm not touching that.
>>339900520
I think it flows much better than 1 and I really liked how the characterized/acted out Isaac.
>>339896010
I thought stuns or stunlocks were the worse things in vidya
>>339900520
I disagree. Played through them not to long ago for the first time and while the first one was good, 2 blew it out of the water in literally every way. Haven't played the third one.
>>339901169
Enjoy yourself anon
>>339897084
no that shit was the fucking worst. I had no fucking clue what was impacting what or what was a side quest or whatever.
>>339901897
You need to be at least 18 to post on this board.
>>339900563
Not only the HUD but all that clusterfuck in the background, holy shit.
>>339900563
HIGH ART
>>339900563
cherry picking
Better than a CASH SHOP DAY 1 in Overmeme
>B-B-B-But its free g-g-g-uys
>>339897084
its not that you should read dialog, its that the dev should implement a dynamic way to tell a story, the worst offender is WoW:
>click on this random NPC
>get 2 pages of "lore"
>Kill X number of mobs in an area
>return get another page of "lore"
it gets really tedious after a very short time to the point where in my 20 lvl free account i just read 3 quests and clicked my way out of the other ones.
talk shit about GW2 all you want but the questing was a thing they did right,
>enter an area
>skip the NPC bulllshit, tell the player what to do
>let the story unfold itself in different forms
>sometimes NPCs will run around asking for your help for a dynamic event on the map
>sometimes you have to solve riddles
>sometimes you have to collect hay and scare rabbits
>sometimes you need to rescue prisioners, etc.
>get a recap of what you did, go to the next area
>>339900967
That sounds like ass to play an you know it.
That idea is objectively worse than a mana bar in every conceivable way. You have shit tastes anon, and you should feel bad for having them.
