I played all 3, and DmC was the only one I didn't like enough to complete. Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, and now Hellblade show a natural propensity towards naturalistic worlds and characters. DmC was not their style, and it showed.

I don't know how or why the director thought he could express mentiall illness through gameplay or why that was even a good idea in the first place. Enslaved was a clone of Bamham's combat with some absolutely terrible shooting thrown in for good measure. Heavenly Sword was a clone of God of War's combat.

And you're going to sit here and tell me that their DmC, the one that actually went above and beyond the studio's lobotomized gameplay designers and emulated DMC, and remains the best western hack n slash as a result, is the worst of the lot because the other two are more realistic?

Exactly, they are aiming for a AAA-like experience on a budget and they are documenting every step of the way in hopes to inspire people and young game developers and also to themselves to see if such a thing is feasible. This is why I respect them but by virture, I don't buy games out of sympathy or pity, to me it still looks mediocre and new-ageish because of the mental illness stuff. If new footage makes it look enjoyable then I might buy it but right now I'm holding my bucks and wishing them the best.

What they're doing is a good thing.

Well many games can be considered art but not in the way you think.
Two good examples argueably could be Bioshock and Shadow of the Colossus.
From a technical level they look brilliant, for their time from art design to actual techniques in light and particle effects.
Each has gameplay that is tight and responsive and immerses the player in the world they are in.
Also they don't suffer from that pseudo something or another, (that thing where gameplay and story clash i.e. Pacifist in cutscene, badass with shotgun outside)
Finally set piece moments that actually invoke something in the player other than, this looks cool.

I have an MBA degree in Art. I went to school for this shit and focused on spotting what the experts in the art world call "Faker's Art." That's anything from simple tracing, to photoshop, all the way up to more serious stuff like counter fitting money and stolen art. Based on my experience in the field, I can tell you that Ninja's Theories concept art is okay.
