Hey V, a family member gifted me their gaming laptop. An MSI CX6I 2QF. Now I've been a console peasant all my life and have no idea What games would be good for my machine.

I was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas? Also any tips on how to look after a gaming laptop? I've been told they are notorious for breaking.

Cheers.

You mean it was your birthday and you asked for it because you're underaged and don't know better.
>>
>>339883467
This. Really OP, we aren't stupid.

That being said, with a full-TDP Haswell i5 and a 940m, you can play pretty much any game out there, just at medium settings on some newer ones. Have fun, and go fuck off and finish high school you twat. We don't want you here.
>>
>>339883621
As for maintenance;

Shoot compressed air in the heatsink every 6 months. Thats about the extent of what I would trust you to not fuck up.

Keep Cheetos, Mountain Dew, anal lubricants, and hot pockets away from the machine.

Do not cum directly on the laptop.

Avoid stepping on the laptop.

Do not handle the laptop with cheeto dust on your fingers.

Avoid sitting on the laptop.

Do not attempt to speak to the laptop. It's listening.
>>
You should be able to play most everything at high or medium so no worries. Check temps often under load and if its constatntly going very high then just get it repasted and cleaned out. Other than that thee isnt much to it. MSI casing generally has a lot of flex so watch out and dont crack the hinges and stuff.

That's pretty nice system, actually. Can run anything out there, but not everything maxed, obviously.

Some PC recommendations of my own, from different ages:

Doom -games
Duke Nukem 3D
Blood
Shadow Warrior 3D
Half-Life -series
Quake 1 & 2
Serious Sam -series (TFE, TSE, BFE)
STALKER trilogy
FEAR + expansions
Portal 1 & 2
Far Cry 1
Crysis 1 + expansion
Max Payne 1-2
Worms: Armageddon
System Shock 1 & 2
Fallout 1 & 2
Killing Floor
Red Orchestra 2 + RS
Warcraft 3 + TFT
C&C: Red Alert 1 & 2
Witcher 1: EE
Talos Principle

>Also any tips on how to look after a gaming laptop?
1) Keep those air vents clean! Canned air + vacuum cleaner once a month helps a ton.
2) invest into those cheap cooling pads with USB fans underneath. Allows the air to flow below the machine, thus keeping it cooler. Can also help ergonomics a bit.
3) In-game settings can help temperatures a ton as well. I had this older Asus ROG laptop, that had fine specs and 1080p monitor, and while I could run MGS5 everything high and at FullHD, I opted to play only at 900p, since it dropped GPU's temps by whooping 10*C! If you can limit the in-game framerate, do so; set it to 60 at tops (usual monitor's refresh rate), and if the game's slower paced, don't be afraid to use even 30fps.
4) Use MSI Afterburner to follow and adjust GPU's speed and temps. Can be used for screencaptures and FPS counter too. The Rivaturner Statistics Server that comes with it also can be utilized to limit framerate on each program individually. Speccy shows all your system's specs and temperatures.
5) Update your drivers right off the bat! Check for new STABLE GPU drivers once a year, minimum.
6) Many laptops with Nvidia card these days has this "Optimus" feature, which auto-chooses either the Nvidia or the integrated video-chip for each specific program. If the game seems to run way too bad, make sure the system's using Nvidia card on it! You can change it via Nvidia Control Panel.

Since STALKER is such a centric /v/-core PC exclusive, here's it's Starting Guide image.

Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: >>>/vg/stalker

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

PS: Don't forget all the EMULATORS! You can easily run just about anything from NES to PSP with your specs already, with the newer consoles of the bunch requiring either more tweaking, or better specs

>>339884037

It's like a 750ti

Well as a gift and hand me down it ain't that bad since it's not integrated shit

But if OP really asked for this shit he's a retard.

You're welcome, broski.

One thing to keep in mind considering the temperatures:
Even if you blow into the vents, some dust CAN start collecting inside the case over time. If your machine's the type that allows relatively easy access into the innards (usually by removing couple screws from the bottom and taking off the plate), you should consider checking under the hood roughly once a year.

Similarly, if the machine's well designed to allow direct access to CPU, GPU and their heatsinks (you can look up some breaking apart videos on YT, etc), it's good practice to apply new Thermal Paste between the processor(s) and the cooling elements every 4-5 years.

...Oh, and learn what each of these settings do in practice.
It will both help and revolutionize your gaming world.

>>339884307
considering that the system was being sold for mere 600€ (~800$) even when it was brand new, it's a pretty good deal. I've seen much worse specs being sold for around the same amount of cash in my country.

Not to mention if a console-fag got it for free and gets to pop his mustard-cherry with it, it's a win-win situation. He can certainly run any pre-2010s game just about maxed out already, and even latest shit at least on 720p.

Overwrite it with W7 Ultimate x64; easiest thing in the world to pirate, and far superior n safer OS

they're one of the best choices out there. I've had this older, 2009 model G60VX for 5 years now, and while it's finally starting to show its age (namely using DDR2 RAM that's limited to 4GB), it has served me very well. Can still run most games just fine (as long as they don't require more RAM, or 64-bit OS), and was a total life-savior back at my Uni, where I did visual editing and 3D modelling (they still had crappy WinXP machines back then!)

MSI and Lenovo are good choices too. All 3 provide good price:performance ratio, as in you don't need to necessarily shell over 1000 bucks to get good specs.

Keep it on a stand, they love to overheat.

Obviously, don't drop it or anything - they're only notorious for breaking because they're portable, and thus often dropped.

>vidya

Anything that's come out recently - Dark Souls, Witcher, etc.

PC only games, such as Starcraft, CS, Civ, etc should all be fine.

Emulate an old console game if you'd like.
