The thing you're failing to quote is about the attitude of free to play games like dota where you're paying for bells and whistles.
The issue here is that it's a pay game, so people feel like these microtransactions shouldn't be here like this. Because it gives the devs an incentive to make loot boxes more rare. So the game is diluted. As opposed to something like adding in microtransactions in the future for completely new content like new legendary skins.

Doesn't really make sense to only dump a few dollars on boxes, since you get a box every few games anyways. 50 boxes and you'll probably get at least one legendary you like, plus you're probably close to 1000 dosh for another one. Big biggest complaint is how transparent Blizzard is that bought boxes have better odds. Additionally, what the fuck is the point of having the in-game currency if it's rare as fuck and requires so much to get anything worthwhile? The rare coin drop is like 50 coins, which is nothing. Even worse is when you get duplicates, because you only get 1/5 the value.

Why do I get so many duplicates when I barely have around 8/50 unlocks for each hero? Statistically, dupes should be fucking rare yet I get them all of the time.

That's considered a legendary drop. That means instead of getting a legendary outright, you only got enough currency to afford 50% of the total cost. The benefit is that you get to pick when you use coins, but honestly it takes fucking forever to get 1k unless you either keep getting the legendary coin drops or you buy boxes.
