Niko actually is pretty relatable. His past has given him a major disconnection from the rest of humanity. When characters like Roman, Brucie act really happy around him, it's kind of sad to see Niko trying to relate.
The mission where he confronts Darko broke my heart. If you decide to kill him, Niko says "I feel empty, ok?...I feel empty...". He was expecting that killing Darko would fill him with some substance but he just feels as empty as before.
The trope of a war veteran has been used a lot in fiction, and that's because it's always been strangely relatable. It's a way of showing that a character is totally disconnected from most other people when he returns home.

I found it very hard to relate to Michael. Given his rich lifestyle, having a family, sleeping with a lot of women, being successful with Solomon...I liked him as a character but I found it almost impossible to relate.
Trevor's situation was a bit more relatable because he was screwed over at the heist in North Yankton and left for dead.

With Micheal it's how despite how unhinged and psychotic he can be, but he does love his family and tries to do right by them. Even though his son is a cunt and his daughter is a spoiled prima donna. His wife is a slut who isl in love with the west coast philosophy and lifestyle and ignoring how she got there.
Micheal wants to make sure his family is safe and happy, but he desperately wants to do what makes him happy.
