I don't know either, never really had fun with alchemy compared to my balanced lore-friendly Geralt build.
You're going to need the advanced radial menu from the Friendly HUD mod to play an alchemy build and not fight against your inventory all the time.

That's hard lock-on, locking camera AND movement to your opponent.
The soft one locks only movement, you can't run anymore and Geralt always faces towards an enemy.

He means the lock on Geralt does automatically against enemies. I don't know how you haven't noticed but you never have complete control over how and where Geralt attacks. He'll always attack towards the soft locked enemy if you don't hard lock something and is kind of magnetized towards it. It is especially annoying when fighting multiple enemies and wanting to swap targets on the fly between them.

After the bats get to dettlaff they make a sound just before they attack, if you roll to the side when you hear the sound they won't hit you
