Remember Mario Galaxy's co-op? Where one player was actually playing the game and the other was there to collect stars 90% of the time, bored out of his mind?
A lot of early WiiU games were like that, the player with the pad had fun while the others would rather do anything else. In the end assymetrical local MP games were mostly left ignored. In MK or Smash both players do the same thing, which is usually more fun.

Virtual Boy's curse was that it was all red. Outside of that, it was more or less between SNES and GBA level graphics with Turbo-Grafx sound.
The library had potential, it's just no one wanted to play games in a blood tinged filter.
