I heard the game and story are separate as in the fighting isn't canon or some shit. I dunno, sounds pretty flimsy to me, hell at least tf2 works in the sense of blending "story" and gameplay.

It kinda works in TF as the classes are quite abstract as characters and you just belive that Blue Spy is different character from Red Spy.
But when you have six Winstons against six Winstons in Overwatch, it's harder to explain and accept as canonical thing.

What I want to know is how they are related to the overwatch as all.
I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but so far they have just been shown as criminals when and why do they join overwatch? What do they do for overwatch? I can't imagine them really caring about any of this unless they are earning fat stacks.

But Junkrat and Roadhog are connected to the lore because Junkrat found something top-secret within the ruined omium factory in Australia and now every world power in the UN wants him dead for it. Chances are he found the thing that made them go haywire and gain sentience in the first place.

Widow used to be the wife of the former leader of Overwatch. She was kidnapped and brainwashed by Talon, and made to assassinate her husband after being rescued. Now they use her as an assassin.
Reaper was an agent of Overwatch who went bad, and was also apparently part of a botched resurrection attempt by Mercy.
