Usually I think of character traits, then check to see if there's some ridiculously dissonnant appearance available, if none go with generic lore-appropriate.

Depends on which design I like more. The BW girl is god tier, so I'd pick her every time. In HG/SS, I'd pick the boy every time because his design is just that much better than the girls.
