Can you name a game that is scarier than P.T.?
Not any of this new shit that's for sure, unless my tolerance for horror has increased since back when PT came out.
>>339761706
Totally true. I'm especially looking forward to that new VR horror game with Lovecraftian inspiration.
>>339761493

>>339761842
What's it called? I gotta see some of that.
>>339761493
Bloodborne.
>>339761989
What's scarier about Bloodborne than PT?
Lostboy was pretty scary
>>339761493
Thief 1, 2, and 3? Also they're actual video games too. How about that!
>>339761906

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>339761989
Bloodborne's theme was cosmic horror but not a second of the gameplay or story were actually scary.
Anyone seen this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFIz_ZhZ4Cw
It doesn't really look that good, but man I'm desperate for a game with ayy lmaos that is not an action-packed bloodfest or another boring horror game set in space or whatever. I just want some spooky and mysterious grays to make me shit my pants.
It was supposed to come out last year, but they haven't even updated the steam greenlight page. The devs are still posting about it on facebook though, so there might be a chance.
>Bloodborne or AvP scarier than P.T.
come on
>>339762753
exactly, I haven't seen anything with half the atmosphere or pure unsettling feeling of PT since after release. what am I missing?
>>339762898
>what am I missing?
Taste.
>>339763270
Different Anon. Tell us a scarier game.
Not even arguing, I just want spooks.
>>339763270
everything prob scares you. what you got that's scarier, son?
>>339761989
the action nature of bloodborne makes it literally impossible to be horror.
you can be spooked but in a game where you're meant to kill everything, you don't really get scared.
>>339762172
only thing scary about those games are the visuals LOL
>>339761493
FNAF
Imagine, specific scares for VR with eyetracking.
Subtle shit that happens in the corner of your view, so that you never get a good look at the threat. People staring at you through windows, that disappear as soon as you look at them.
That shit could kill a man.
>>339761989
Well, it is quite frightening to be alone
>>339763506
that's what I'm thinking, there are things in bloodborne that are unsettling like that thumerian queen who is pregnant and bleeding, and there are intense moments like monsters yelling at the top of there lungs, but not truly scary.

Honestly, Dreadhalls on Oculus was cake compared to P.T.
VR alone isn't enough, they need to bring that technology like you mentioned together with geniuses such as del Toro and the game would be outstanding.
>horror game
>it's a POV walking simulator with jump scares and no gameplay
>>339764273
you considered guns gameplay huh
>>339764273
>mad and meming because the walking sim teaser with 1 (one) hallway was still somehow more well crafted than his faves
White Day will forever be the scariest game to me, even with its 2000 graphics
>>339764029
It would be cool to try out, though all it would take would be 1 jumpscare for me to never ever try it again
>load up horror game from today
>3 hours of walking is considered a tutorial
>>339763692
Better yet, add learning into the mix.
See a monster but aren't afraid of it? No problem, we'll just track your head and eye movements and pulse and figure out which ones get you REALLY freaked, and then we'll change the game so you run into those more.

Getting killed and respawning kills more tension than anything

>>339765651
the cartoony one? what was intense about that?
>>339765606
I watched it.
PT isn't actually that scary honestly.
Theres ONE jump scare and everything else is just a haunted house simulator.
It doens't do it any favors that it's the same hallway over and over.
>>339765796
Play it. Don't look anything up on it.
>>339765651
You mean Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion.
>>339765879
Actually there's a few different jumps, most happen once a play through
>>339765879
but the story that sets everything up, the way the scares are set up, the art, the atmosphere, it's on a higher level than most of this other crap, it feels like actual pros made it, and that's just the teaser.
>>339765962
Yes, they had to change the name recently so I didn't know if /v/ would know what game I was referring to
>>339764605
>>339765879
But it creates a sense of dread. That is what real horror is.
>>339761493

>>339766093
>>339766191
>>339766025
It can also be completed in 30 minutes.
It's a shitload easier to design ONE really good isolated experience then a 6-12 hour game.

most of these other horror games that you can compare it too are in small areas as well. it's what they did with the space in PT that counted.
>>339764605

>>339764114
Allison road is total bullshit
The video that shows the game has glitches and it's basically screaming LOOK HOW SCARY IT IS GUYS
It doesn't even try to put you at ease and then actually throw in the mindfuck you're supposed to go through
Visage on the other hand does the job perfectly
It's mostly silence and normal noises and then things start to get very uncomfortable
I'd say Visage is the only one that nails the horror that PT created despite being a simple teaser
>it's a horror game with a monster that keeps killing you and desensitizes you to it
what game is this?
>>339766467
>Freak out and turn it off and go to bed
>Turns itself on at 3:17 AM
>Low chuckles coming from device
>"Did you think it was over?"
>>339766475
Yeah, I saw a teaser for Visage and I got hyped.
Honestly, I wish they'd do the same POV style but in a setting that isn't a house.
I don't have a ps4 and I've never played/seen PT yet.
should i just watch a youtube playthrough or wait for the offchance that I can get a PS4 WITH the pt demo on it since it was removed
>>339764684
To be honest the game puts you in many dangerous situations
Some times Lisa will randomly spawn behind you for just enough time to see the shadows or something twitching and then die
The whole mood is very uncomfortable
After the whole red clusterfuck (the part about the baby laughs) the game gets very tense
Lisa will sometimes 3 feet from you and you'll hear her cry directly in your ear like she's breathing on your neck
Very unsettling stuff in my opinion, that teaser and some moments in MGSV just show that Kojima would have totally nailed it but Kojima just had to pull the plug

I think Alien Isolation is pretty damn good. I'm playing it right now and the Alien is pretty frightening and makes things fucking tense. Especially since it's AI is rather good. It get startled a lot and just how fucking fast it can suddenly move.
>>339764684
What is "danger" in a video game? The threat of having to respawn?
P.T. is absolutely terrifying, end of story.
>>339761871
Pretty great game to soak yourself into the atmosphere. I wish I could play It again for the first time. Leagues better than Cry of Fear and it's over narrated heavy metal bullshit.
does alien isolation compare to PT's style of horror?
I want that same sense of horror
>>339766964

Don't worry, anon. It's already ordered itself for you.

Horror buff here. P.T. is easily one of the scariest games of all time. I'm not gonna say it's the best because horror is subjective to what scares you. I will say this though - P.T. is brilliant in it's premise and one of the finest examples of "horror". Looping through the same hallway over and over was a great psychological effect. It made you very cautious of every small, or big, change. It's a damn fucking shame Silent Hills was canceled, literally breaks my heart.
Anyways here are some lessen known horror titles highly worth checking out. And they're all cheap on Steam.
The Cat Lady
Layers of Fear
Pony Island
Year Walk
I Am Alive
Anyone interested in horror should play this...

>>339767079
>What is "danger" in a video game?
Forgetting the fact that you're in fact in a videogame and be so into it that you're afraid whatever happens to your character will instead happen to you
Horror obviously doesn't work without immersion
>>339767601

>>339767601
I didn't like the shift in music. They did a great job making it fit, but still nothing in Cat Lady comes close to Thousand Shades of Red in the original Downfall.
>>339768036
It's better than the Slender knockoffs. At least people are actually putting effort in the P.T. stuff.
Just watched the trailer on YouTube. Visage looks fucking awesome.
You guys do know that P.T. was basically Silent Hill: The Room, right?
how did the man that made MGSV make PT? was it just del toro carrying everything
>>339768475
That's actually a game, kek.
But anyways, P.T. was way scarier than the Silent Hill titles I've played. (most of them)
>>339768595
obviously we dont know how much kojima did vs how much del toro did, but it's naive to say del toro carried it, he added his ideas as film maker and story teller.
Allison Road.

Visage.

I would add Layers of Fear but that game already came out and honestly not all that scary. It was too scripted for my taste.
>>339768595
I wouldn't be surprised. It had a very cinematic feel. And Del Toro directed my favorite horror movie of all time (The Devil's Backbone).

FNAF
>visage is VR supported

>>339769247
No, Undertale is scarier.
>>339769247
I found FNAF 4 scarier, just because listening for sounds is so much scarier than looking for images, personally. Also having to check behind you.

Do jumpscares qualify as scary?

>>339768825
I don't know if the trailers for visage are just general ideas being shown of the direction of the game, but it looks bad as far as a horor game goes. It seems really tone deaf and just jumps from dead silence to "here's a bunch of spooky stuff at once."
Even alison road seems leagues below PT, but it gets the tension build up much better than what Visage has shown so far.
>>339768475
Not really
It has some parts that obviously inspired Kojima though
>>339768595
the mission where you fight the man on fire in mgsv has a building beforehand that is spooky in first person. it's setup with a radio broadcast from PT before you get there, there were also some moments in other MGS games that were spooky, clearly kojima or someone else on his team has a knack for horror.

Yeah I was gonna mention TEW in this thread but I feel like it turns into 20 faggots reminding me the game is shit and derails a thread. I though that game did really well with it's spooky atmosphere, when it was good. Like the beginning chainsaw chase, ruvik's sister boss fight, and alot of the "countryside" areas were really good. Even the hub world was awesome as far as atmosphere goes.
These things were pretty terrifying. Their slow lumbering walk, the erratic breathing, the glowing eyes constantly darting around. I don't think I've ever faced an enemy in a game that made me feel legitimate fear like these have.
>>339771012

The idea that Guillermo Del Toro and Hideo Kojima would make a game together. Two shitty directors combining to make a horrible game is the scariest thing of all.
Altering the brightness and contrast makes that game almost indistinguishable from real film photographs.
>>339775147

>>339775551
>First of all it is
No, it's not.
>>339764684
Yes, but whats extra creepy and unsettling about this game is that you don't ever really know when you're going to die. If you touch Lisa, or get close enough that she lunges at you and "possesses" you, she can pretty much kill you whenever you turn around, but not every time you turn around, so you don't really know. I've had runs where I don't get killed at all, and I've had runs where I get killed multiple times.
>>339775893
Whatever, it's subjective
Lisa a cute
I don't think a Doom 3 is a good game, nor do I think that jumpscares are the end-all-be-all of horror, but the game just piles them on one after another and, with the pretty okay lighting for the time, it makes every fucking corner another chance for a spoopy trap. At some point you just can't be ready for the scare or predict it. Literally the only game I've had to stop playing because it gets my heart pounding too fast.

DeS, DaS and Bloodborne are horror games because of the overwhelming sense of dread and abandonment. There doesn't have to be any jumpscares for a game to be horror, there just needs to be a certain atmosphere. Those games have that atmosphere.
