Picked it up upon release last year and ended up selling it back for other games.
Purchased it again last week and am kicking myself or being such a fool. In Velen now and loving everything about it.
Just got my ga!ing headset and now there is no turning back. The music, atmosphere, lore and even the peasant banter is awesome.

It has all the recipes to strike popular, throw in how sickingly streamlined it is and the fact that it's ultimately is more fun to watch than play and you have the reddit "TLOU IS TEH CITIZEN KANE OF GAMING" crowd who blatantly plague /v/ flocking to it.
The game was garbage, story was meh, characters and lore were fantastic admittedly and the writing and cinematic shots via cutscene were expertly crafted but the game failed as a whole. Loot is all but near worthless the moment you get witcher gear, POIs/dungeons turn into a chore, quests follow a sickingly formulaic narrative (Geralt following red shit as he mumbles to himself), combat offering close to no variety and the oils/potions serving more as an accessory than the prior strategic usage that it held in past games as well as in game lore and it failed on almost all fronts to me.
Perfect example that sums up this game perfectly:

The combat in both games is awful but you at least have access to more weapons than swords.
Combat is pretty bad. It's not unplayable though. I'm really not sure what the fuck they were trying to do with it. I wouldn't even call it real time combat. It's some pseudo version of it because of the shitty auto locking you get forced into and the change in movement. You could almost slap a transition screen in there because it feels so different compared to how you move around in the world outside of combat.
Magic is shallow as fuck and completely uninteresting with Quen standing way above the rest to the point of ridiculousness. Sword combat somehow manages to be even more shallow and you have no real control over the animations Geralt is using. It's fucking annoying because some animations are longer than others which can fuck you over if you're trying to time an attack. Alchemy is mostly just buffs and doesn't really make combat more fancy just easier.
I don't know. I can see the workings of something potentially good but it feels like they gave up on it partway through.
