Are there any truly good gaming laptops? Should I just build my own? I would get a desktop but being in college I move pretty much every year/ summer, so lugging it around is awful. Plus I may move cross country in a year once school is done, so it would just be easier with a laptop.

unless laptops truly are crap and it's worth lugging around the desktop
>>
Inspiron 7559
Gets the job done, works fine, been happy with it so far.

You won't get top PC performance but for a laptop it's great for the price.

Cool I'll check it out. Is it viable to build a laptop?
>>
>>339719773
If you have to ask, no it isn't.
>>
>>339719159
>moving a pc once/twice a year is awful
fucking how? just get like a mini itx or micro or something.

Are those compatible with any type of hardware?

MSI, Asus and Lenovo make the best bang for the buck laptops. As in you don't need to shell over 1000 bucks to get decent gaming performance out of them.

Building a laptop used to be pretty much impossible, but now there are services like the pcspecialist.co.uk, that lets you pick components for different base machines, essentially creating the dream laptop fit for your budget. Pic related is a bit old now, but demonstrates the point.

As with desktops, the specs are the key. A strong dedicated GPU with its own memory is a must, a fast (pref. 2.5Ghz or higher) multicore CPU helps a ton, and there's no reason to go below 8GB RAM this day and age.

If you're tight on money, you should not totally shoot down systems with mere integrated GPU. Anything from Intel HD 4000 forward has provided surprisingly decent gaming performance. Just make sure you have plenty of RAM then, as the video chip uses it as its VRAM.

You still need to plug that shit into a wall, carry a separated monitor, KB, mouse, audio devices... etc.

I agree that if you got the space and money, having a desktop is superior choice. But if you move around a lot and need mobility, laptops are the way to go.

>inb4 get a shit-book or tablet
why waste money on literal toys?
>>
>>339719159

I'm at the smae position OP.
I wanna buy a gaming laptop for my PC games.
Think about ASUS Rog or some Alienware
>>
Anyone know of any laptops that are good for 3D CAD software and also decent for gaming?

From what I've read I assume it's either one or the other but it's not like I want the best output for gaming. Just something to play most games on.

Looking at Lenovo at the moment.
>>
>>339720071
i mean the case size can limit the kind of harware you buy but other than that it depends on what motherboard you get

>But if you move around a lot and need mobility
but op said he just moves it two and from uni basically. i don't imagine this counts as moving around a lot
>>
>all these laptop threads
Are these the same faggota calling themselves master race?

A 400$ console is expensive but a shitty underpowered laptop is definitely worth 2 grand
>>
>>339720203
Alienware is overpriced crap, riding on nothing but its brand when it comes to prices.

I own an older Asus ROG, and it has served me well.

>>339720349
if it has good CPU, enough RAM, and decent dedicated GPU, it can do anything just fine. Intel + Nvidia is the undeniable masterrace in this category.

It's not like everyone has a dedicated CAD or Photoshop desktop either.
>>
>>339720071
You should really read up on computers
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

But short answer, yes as long as it fits.

>>339720203
No you fucking don't

>>339720349
If you have the money you should look at business grade laptops, hp (consumer branch is shit though) and dell are good in those departments. It also really depends on what level your work is on but a good computer tend to be a good computer even though it can be specialized in one way or another
>>
Is there a device which can remotely control a desktop? The desktop pc streams its monitor at a reduced resolution and the pickup device has keyboard and mouse inputs? THAT would strike me as the best of both worlds.
>>
>>339720718
if you know this little about computers than just get a laptop and be done.
>>
>>339720718
Yes, anything with a cpu.
>>
>>339719159
Trust me, gaming laptops are really not worth it. After my last shitty laptop i just wanted something that would play all of the games at 20 fps (yes, it was that bad), and yeah, be careful what you wish for.

I've got MSG GX 70. It's GPU is solid, but it has a fucking amd cpu. If only i knew what this fucking cpu would do to me back then.

Just do yourself a favor and have an enjoyable experience instead of settling for portability.

>>
>>339720163
What website is your pic? Thanks for the advice. My only concern is pretty much this
>>339721038

Maybe if I just make sure the specs are solid it'll be okay? I'm not going to play super demanding games on them, but I dont want performance to suffer that much
>>
>>339721370
The video sucks ass and so does the laptop
>>
>>339721812
DO NOT GET A GAMING LAPTOP! Never ever do, especially since you say you plan on playing lighter games. Gaming laptops are a complete meme and only retards fall for it. You can play games on a macbook air these days (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvX22sKOPqY) and it doesn't even have a dedicated GPU and windows compatibility sucks ass. You do not need to buy a bulky, extremely power consuming, terribly built, overpriced, and hot as fuck computer to do so.

Also I do not recommend the MBA I was just proving a point, get something with a dedicated GPU
>>
>>339721812
> I'm not going to play super demanding games on them

Then why are you considering a "gaming" laptop in the first place? Just buy something old and used that will run cs, mobas and old shit and enjoy life.

You are simply stealing from your enjoyment of gaming experience by going the laptop route.

>>339722498

can confirm, i'm this >>339721038 retard, but, to be fair, the build quality/audio/screen etc are all great, the only little detail that sucks ass is performance.

OP, you can of course buy some 2-3k$ alienware monster if you have money coming out of your ass, and even then it will lose to simply decent PC. Bite the bullet with moving and just buy a PC. Instead of thinking about laptop think about an efficient and hustle free way to pack/transport a real computer, it's time better spent.
>>
Laptops are not meant for gaming. Most laptops use a ball grid array to connect the GPU, which means that every time your GPU gets hot, there's a chance that the joints connecting it to the motherboard will fracture during thermal expansion, leaving you with an expensive brick. This tendency has gotten worse in recent years with lead-free solder.

MSI GT70
i own one with the 880m, bretty gud, 8gb vram allows for some crazy modding stuff in vidya. Does a lot of games very well, not ultra 60fps newest games ofc but like GTA V works at the very least on 50fps with everything on ultra except the AA in FHD resolution, and that's not even that good of an optimized game. I think there's a new model out with a 9XXm card they should be good, although they're really fucking heavy, noisy and usually monitors are absolute trash, but trust me, in college, they're useful af, especially as a desktop-laptop that you don't carry anywhere

I live in a two bedroom apartment in center city and travel quite a bit so a Oc wasn't much of a good option for me. I live pretty frugally but also make really good money. I dropped 3.5k on an Origin laptop and it has been amazing. It has a desktop cpu and desktop gtx980 in it and can run any game on ultra settings no problem. The way the laptop is built everything is socketed and not soldered so I should be able to keep up with new GPU's as I see fit as they are released, but the gtx980 should be fine for at least a couple more years. It is a great laptop and exactly what I wanted.
>>
Sure, get a laptop for gaming if you enjoy MELTING it. Just get a desktop, it's worth the extra work to move it around.
>>
OP here, I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and just get a desktop. I would like the portability but I think overall I'm better off just spending the money on a good desktop. I already have the peripherals needed at home from past computers.
>>
I got a G751 JY and it's the best laptop I ever got, if you need to move often from an house to another, it's awesome to have desktop power and being able to bring in around easy

make that another half a decade.
I'm still running GTX 560ti 1GB from 2011, and see no reason to upgrade yet.
>>
>>339719159
You can get a laptop with a GTX 980 in it but they're expensive and probably have a 10 minute battery life
>>
>>339721110
the thing about computers is if you're too stupid to figure out things for yourself you're probably to stupid to successfully execute whatever it is you're trying to accomplish.
