Witcher 3 was an improvement in every single way over Witcher 2, it had open world done right.
Gothic/Risen also has open world done right.

MGSV open world kind of made sense cause of the base infiltration
TW3 is the worst example of needless open world, the game suffered immensely cause of it. Might even say that that's it biggest flaw(and it has a bunch of them)

ayy lmao

Witcher 3 remains the best open world.
>>
I see 2 great games in your picture OP
>>
There's nothing wrong with open world games, just developers that weren't capable of it.

RDR pc remaster when?
>>
>>339705429
never, cucked pleb
fuck off already!
remastering/sequels/prequels meme must die as soon as possible
>>
>>339705560
It'll never die so you better get used to it turbonerd.
>>
>>339704816
Don't worry OP you're right. But for children quantity > quality. A lot of open world games are boring and full of copy pasted content and padding. I remember when mgsv was announced open world I was one of the few to be concerned and I voiced my concerns and the children got butchers like they are now because they can't take any criticism for their favourite games. Some games do open world right with smaller more detailed and unique maps, but as soon as a game boasts "biggest video game map ever!" you know you're in for shit. But anyways, it's always easy to spot casuals and underagers in these threads. They aren't experienced or mentally developed enough to see these things or be critical of games they like.
>>
>>339705560
shouldn't you be begging for skyrim mods or something?

We already know XV isn't open world like Skyrim, it's like FF1-9 but just in 1:1 scale and it's still narrative and story focused first with the open world build around that. Nice meme.
>>
>>339704816
I never understood the point of mgsv being open world.

>no mujahedeen anywhere
>the PMCs in Africa never fight eachother
>everyone just hangs out in outposts that can be completely avoided
>missions are still their own independent sequeneces, not even really tied to the open world part.

It felt extremely unnecessary.
>>
>>339704816
Never ever ;p
>>
Open world games are the future of AAA gaming because they're potentially cheaper to make if done properly.

The days are gone where you can cheaply make a 10-15 hour linear game. Look at Bioshock Infinite.
>>
>>339706653
Afghanistan seems like a wasted opportunity. You can't do missions for the Soviets, which kinda goes against the point of Diamond Dogs.
>>
>>339705185
I agree, TW3 was annoying.

Skellige was a good example: 70% of '?' locations are war booty/ smugglers caches in the sea that take fucking forever to get to while being gang banged every 100ft by ekhidnae

I ended up spending all my coin on recipes and diagrams so that I didn't have to check every place on the map
>>
Red Dead warrants an open world, faggot.
>>
>>339704917
I personally feel like if the Witcher 3 had a more confined map then it might have overall become less of a chore to navigate, and especially toncollect the treasure quests. No reason for all the emptiness in Skelliga.
>>
TW3 becomes a lot better without a minimap and question marks turned off tho.
>>
>>339705016
Wonder how much will be explorable
>>
>>339704902
OP here i didnt call RDR trash
Its just empty
>>
>>339708117
The game clearly wasn't designed to be played that way.
>>
>>339704816
MGSV was fantastic
>>
>>339709694
it's a desert mang what did you expect ?

>/v/ six years ago
>"WHY IS EVERY GAME SO LINEAR!!"
>/v/ today
>"WHY IS EVERY GAME SO OPEN!!"
>>
>>339710030
Maybe not but it's still far more enjoyable to be played that way.
>>
>>339704816
RDR had reason to have vast empty spaces you do nothing but ride through because that's part of the romantic appeal of a western.

Metal Gear had no business having this in places of many small but well designed areas like it usually does though, I do agree with that. You're right that the open world thing has spread where it doesn't need to.
>>
>>339710184
MGSV is about a soldier dropped behind enemy lines and has to infiltrate bases etc, therefor a vast open landscape with enemy encampments you can survey from a safe distance then infiltrate in a way you see fit kind of makes sense, as opposed to appearing in a super secret underground dr evil base.
>>
>>339706928
Kinda? More like strictily against the point of DD and going Nuclear.
>>
>>339705560
>remastering meme has to die
Tell that to sony
>>
>>339710170
Those are both still valuable arguments.

The balance is missing and some type of games need to tend to the one more than the other or a mix of both that fits.

Doing Open World just because it trends is shitty, while not being that big to begin with. MGSV was fucking small.
>>
I would love more games like Dark Souls 1 - open or mostly open world, but with a densely-packed world and a sense of direction.
>>
>>339704816
Interesting choice of games there honey buns. Both of them are exceptionally good open world games.
>>
>>339710170
"Open" doesn't necessarily have to mean game is a giant empty world with the same 4 or 5 tasks copypasted 20 timea each to provide the game's content. Look at Dishonored. It has very open ended levels that provide alot of options and replayability despite being small and contained.

Sounds like you guys want something like the Yakuza games.
>>
>>339711157
Whats wrong with the Yakuza games?

5 was my GOTY for 2015, can't wait for Kiwami and 0, especially 0
>>
>>339704816
Fuck off you contrarian. I love open world games.
>>
>>339711240
I was saying Yakuza do the open world games right. It's like a town size but with a lot of stuff to do.
>>
>>339711479
Past MGS games where like this. I hope Yakuza stays this way. I was astonished how much content 5 had.
>>
>>339711694
Ain't Shenmu games like that? Maybe that new one that's coming will be cool. Assuming it doesn't have QTE's
>>
>>339712035
Shenmue's QTE weren't obnoxious shit and very rare anyway
>>
>>339710875
>Doing Open World just because it trends is shitty, while not being that big to begin with. MGSV was fucking small.
This. Mother Base in MGSV was just pointless and only took space away from the main areas of operations. Also, why does the game have two Mother Bases anyway?
>>
>>339704816
Open world isn't the problem. The problem is putting fucking nothing in said open world.
