I've put 500 hours into Elite:Dangerous, but I don't know if I'd recommend it. Its pretty empty of content and if you do get into it like I did, it'll be because of the grind. Honestly it was just something to do while listening to podcasts, so if thats what you want I'd say go for it, but otherwise stay clear. It isn't super fun or exciting or anything like that.
And I got tired of Overwatch in the beta, so I wouldn't recommend that either.
Play Ultima Online instead.

Elite Dangerous is absolutely fucked at the moment, especially for newcomers.
For some reason the devs are obsessed with shitting up the game with more and more grind. For a while it was just grind to the big ships, which are largely irrelevant unless you want to do boring shit like trade or mine, and grind in powerplay, which is easily ignored as there is almost no point to powerplay, but since the engineers update it's now grind to get a ship that won't be annihilated in seconds by an NPC.

The grind is way too much for too little of an experience change. There really isn't much variety when it comes to ship classes. It also suffers from the space game idea where they want to make it realistic but no one wants to admit after 20 mins space is boring as shit and just a giant box filled with stars.
Elite has more content and replayability than Overwatch.
Which tells a lot and both are the shame of the industry with their pricetag for the amount of content they offer.

The engineers update allows for incredibly OP shit that would take literally dozens of hours for players to grind for but NPC ships just have them.
And when I say annihilated in seconds I really mean in seconds. We are talking plasma accelerators with the firing rate of a multi-cannon that never overheat. I have never had a problem with fighting the AI in Elite dangerous but my first encounter after the engineers update was with a cobra that completely disabled my a-rated, twice boosted python's shields in a single pass. People in anacondas are losing fights to fucking eagles, for christ's sake. The balancing has all gone to shit.

Are you sure? I see nothing to indicate there has been any update to 2.1.
And honestly, my biggest concern right now is the fact that mission are broken. Had to pay a 600,000CR fine last session because it was impossible to turn in a transport mission I took. The fact that I nearly lost my ship twice from pirate interdiction while making the trip sure didn't help.
I don't mind the new AI so much, just the equipment they have immediate access to. I do find it irritating that they never seem to turn when playing chicken with them, no matter how much larger my ship is. Ramming isn't an appropriate tactic for every ship but the AI don't seem to know that.

If I knew that when Frontier said they were going to "overhaul" the missions what they meant was they are going to break them more than ever then I never would have bothered checking out the engineers update. This update is already months behind schedule and it's still completely fucked. And it breaks the rest of the game in the process too.
