and yes, the jap voice actors are pretty bad most of the time since they try to sound "professional" in the english sense, the only time they excel at voices is when they are doing really stereotypical japanese voices like the cutesy girls and ibuki theatre voices

If the dub is actually well made then there's no significant issue because the voices can be just as well picked if not better.
You won't have a natural attunement to the writers native language so you won't get the same vibe that they did when choosing the voice for the character anyway.
At best you're getting a rough outline of the original intention and vision unless you can speak the language.
That's not even getting into the boat of whether or not the creator is just awful at choosing voice direction because of personal skill or shit taste or whatever.
Sakamoto had a personal hand in the english voice direction of Other M and that just ended up significantly worsening the end product (Voices in this case isolated from gameplay and story).
He probably doesn't speak english well at all but that's an example I can present to support my argument that the creator's input does not automatically make a voice better.

Jap games and their characters were designed with Jap voices in mind.
When you have a colorful character trying to sound all serious in English it just doesn't feel right. With Jap voices you subconsciously relate it to anime so it becomes fine. Many dubs also have actors trying too hard to copy the fast, high pitched sounds of Jap voices and it becomes cringey.
Jap voices might sound the same for native Jap speakers, but because I don't speak it, it's easier for me to ignore it and focus on the rest.

That's the real reason why Japanese audio trumps English audio - the Japanese can't write for SHIT, and you realize how horrible the writing is when you hear it in English. Too bad the translators get caught in the crossfire.
