When I grew up the The Learning Channel didn't show reality shows and had good science shows, same with the Discovery Channel. The History channel had a lot of great shows, mostly on Hitler/WW2 ops, WW1, other wars, ancient history, and shit like Modern Marvels and architecture.
There was a place to sit, watch, and learn about the past but now there is nothing informational on TV anymore. And you can bet your ass they aren't watching things about history on youtube or facebook.

As far as actual information goes, learning from shows isn't the worst. Unless it's something stupid like Ancient Aliens or whatever drivel they put out nowadays, actual history shows can be pretty informative. Not in a deep sense, but at least give you a foothold into that topic. You just need to learn where to spot bias in the media that you're choosing to read.
Obviously, you're not going to jump into college-level textbooks right off the bat, and some of the lower-grade books are subpar. If you do try the higher-level books, be warned. I've got an Irish history book that will make you want to start up the Troubles again.
The thing I love about WW1 and WW2 is that they were so horrific in what happened that in 1000 years they will literally be legends.
Hell, they might even end up being considered one war by that time. A legendary war that consumed the entire world and ended with a glimpse of the apocalypse.

Seriously, it's fucking awful. They're repetitive, dull, literally nothing of consequence or interest happens in them, and it's always some form of awful tournament-style competition making it into some sort of weird soap opera-competition hybrid.
The only reality shows I watch or have watched is Alone and, occasionally, Forged in Fire since it focuses almost 100% on the production process of something I know nothing about. Everything else is beyond trash and is a symptom of a dead generation of TV. To make things worse, the only other stuff on TV is episodic bullcrap.
It's the one reason why I only watch anime at this point. I'd rather watch a romance that develops and puts a smile on my face with girls acting like women, rather than the 9000th episode of Chopped or something equally awful.
Worse yet, I used to love the History (Battlefield Britain was a fav) channel when it actually explored history, and the Discovery channel, mostly Daily Planet before Jay Ingram left. Now it's nothing but Castle, filler-y How It's Made and reality TV shit like Dual Survival.

Japan isn't one person. Japanese veterans from the war want to tell the truth. There's more than one book in circulation. The reason the schools were never taught this is because one of the members of the board of education was an officer during the war.
