As a massive DQ fan, DQVI (and IX) just doesn't have the strong character development and story that most of the other games do. I'm not claiming the story and characters are bad by any means. Just not up to the lofty peaks of the other games. This is mostly because every character in the game really only has one small quest that develops them (Milly finds her brother, Carver finds his parents, Nevan is literally only there to help you get a boat, etc). And otherwise, they are just along for the ride. The only characters who seem to get more story is the hero and Barbara, who get two developing moments instead of one.
Aside from the characters and story, the biggest problem is using the class system. Dragon Quest III and IX get away with the class system because they have very open ended stories and events. But Dragon Quest VI had very specific events and possibly the most linear story in the DQ series. Which kind of conflicted with the class system. It also made Dragon Quest VI feel like a beta version of Dragon Quest VII, which is essentially the same class system and focus on story, but with 10x more to it.
Overall, I don't hate the game by any means. But its pretty obvious why its the black sheep of the series and overlooked by most.

The skill system of DQVIII was set up so that any skill tree you went down, you could still beat the game. Provided you didn't split your points up between every single skill tree. In other words, you don't have any reason to grind.
While a class system has a lot more oppertunities to mess up. Especially the class system in DQVII, where you'll spend 30 hours leveling Pirate or Tamer, only to find it doesn't lead to a tier 3 class. Making you have to stop and grind up to something like Sage to make your character viable in battle.
tl;dr: Skill system in DQVIII doesn't require pre planning or grinding. Class system can work fine, but requires pre planning to avoid grinding.

Now, while the PS4 is plenty successful in Japan, there's a few things.

2. Splatoon is the first console game in Japan to sell over a million copies in a WHILE
