32 games wntered, /v/ voted, and now we have our champion.
This was by far the most peaceful final round of voting we have ever had in the history of the /v/ beackets. There was a strong string of opinions that echoed the ideology that both games were worthy contenders of the title and neither side would be that upset regardless of the outcome.

Voters for Rocket League mostly argued the classic "gameplay first" ideology. Many saw Rocket League as an example of how more games should be developed, citing the Witcher as an example of how narrative-focused design has overtaken the AAA market and "dumbed down" the mechanical aspects of games in favor of cinematic and story centric gaming. Many RL voters even admitted that TW3 will possibly be remembered more fondly in the coming years than RL for its epic scale, but that at the end of the day, RL was simply "more of a videogame".
Witcher voters were less homogenous on their reasonings. Some praised the Witcher as the single best open world RPG in years or even ever, while other focused their reasoning on criticizing the competition, calling out RL as a "meme/normie game" that was no more worthy of the title than games such as Call of Duty.

My personal favorite game of 2015 was N++, followed most likely by Bloodborne, so I didn't have any personal stake in this final round. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed the Witcher 3 when I first played it, but don't really have the strive to go back to it ass often as I do to Rocket League, which still keeps me consistantly entertained whenever I boot it up.
That being said, I feel that TW3 was unfairly criticized here. It has a strong focus on story, yes. I would expect that from any high budget RPG. Calling it a movie game is going to far in my opinion. It still has replayability and can be challenging enough at times.
Anyway, that's a wrap. We're taking suggestions for the next bracket now.

I'm pretty happy with this, my favourite games of 2015 were:
1. The Witcher 3.
2. Bloodborne
3. Ori
The witcher 3 really just felt like the absolute culmination of a realised, loved world, with perfect, memorable side quests, incredibly well written characters, and a setting and mythology that introduced elements of slavic infuences incredibly well, and never really grew tiring.
Bloodborne had my favourite gameplay of 2015, but it really took the DLC to elevate it to the levels I felt with the rest of the souls series other than 2.
Ori just felt fresh, original and well crafted in every way.

You know OP, I can agree with your post somewhat, as The Witcher and Rocket League are good games. However, I don't think they deserved GOTY. Another game holds that title for me because, as much as I enjoy Rocket League, I think a game should have a strong singleplayer over anything else, and as much as I enjoy The Witcher, it was a little too heavy on the story, something I feel has been plaguing RPGs forever.

This is a silly complaint because Halo 5 is the first Halo game released in the achievement era that has never updated its achievement roster. It's still sitting at only 1000 GS months after release. What's more, the achievements are painlessly simple to get. I got them all within a week of the game coming out.

I find that the skills that make someone capable of playing a sport such as Soccor or Rugby (spatial reasoning, reckoning time and distance, situational awareness) are also required for Rocket League (and a lot of video games, really). Having played both those sports, I definitely have an unfair advantage playing Rocket League. I can see why it wouldn't appeal to the average nerd. Unlike other video games where skills and cooldowns can be used to mask a player's lack of these skills, Rocket League has no fluff. It's all about mechanical skill and fast thinking.

I hate racing games and never played many sports games since I'm not into sports. But I can totally see Rocket League winning that, the love for it was rabid. It makes sense why people would love something so razor focused on control and skill based on an old premise.
Personally I'd say like Witcher 3 with HoS, Bloodborne with the Hunters and Shadowrun Hong Kong take it for me. Amazing time for bigass RPGs. Never finished Pillars but it had a ton of issues at launch.
Fuck's sake though MGS5. The more I look back the less I remember that stood out as great. I even forgot my favorite mission that I thought would at least be an MGS moment for me forever.
Great year for vidya last year, and this one's shaping up wonderfully as well.
