What I think people need to realize is that armor in video games doesn't hold the same value as it does in real life. Armor in games are simply points into your defense stat, where as in real life you would wear it to cover parts of your body. So really it just comes down to what you like. It's an issue of internal consistency. If a woman was to go to war, would she wear armor? If at all possible, yes. Your odds of survival skyrocket with armor on. Would the armor look any different? It would be tailored to fit her frame, like any other commissioned armor, but the curves and angles would be near identical because they are shaped that way for maximum survivability. Realistically, women in crusade-era times didn't march off into battle, and if they did they disguised themselves and wore "male armor." But there was another type of armor that ladies wore, which was the dress and air of court. While men went to war, women gained power and influence through aristocracy, marriage and money. The full-blown lady-gown WAS the protective armor of the day.
"cutesy" dress clothes are a way more realistic armor choice for women in vidya. Maybe they don't look like they belong on the battlefield... but NO woman of any status would roam around in the widlerness in an armor bikini. "Realistic" armor generally looks better and is more attractive for either gender than the latter anyway.
Ideally the designer will have put in some actual fucking effort into researching armor design and will know proper aesthetics but "realistic" armor is a decent stopgap measure since it limits the atrocities that a designer without limits can inflict upon the eyes.
