How good are you at fighting games
>>
Breddy gud, wouldn't say i'm tournyfag-tier or anything but i can't remember the last time i've lost.
>>
I'm not. At all.

I'm not convinced I've ever won a game of a multiplayer fighting game.
>>
Depends on the game.

Budokai Tenkaichi 2 I'm absolutely godly.
Smash I suck at.
Injustice I probably suck at too.
>>
I'm terrible but I'm addicted to playing them
>>
so good that I've stopped playing since it felt like there's no point anymore

Not very, but at least I'm not longer button mashing. Having someone to play with at or slightly above your skill level helps, and you can git gud together.

not very good.
I can own the game and practice all the time and still lose regularly to my friend even when it's his first time playing.

I'm at that point where none of my irl friends (except my brother.) will play against me, (I had one give up mortal kombat x after I finally bought a ps4 and the game.) yet I still get trompped online

course the fact that I have a shitty internet connection might have a bit to do with that. but still.
>>
Pretty decent, but then, my friends have all been playing fighting games since SF2 and all of them are incredibly competitive.
>>
I'm pretty good at footsies and defense, but get completely shut down if I'm forced to play aggressively because I can't into pressure no matter how hard I try

I'm at this point where I body all my friends (who only heard about fighting games by SF2 or le epic evo moment) but struggle online. I'm ultra bronze in SFV but spent a lot of time in casual matches instead. I think I have at least the level of a silver player on my best days

Mine aren't that far off but i fucking hate traffic, and i barely know anyone so i tend to not go very often.

Its a shame but that just means i have to stick to netplay friends, which is fine since most of the games i end up playing most have good netcode.

You can actually dash and hold forward and then tap back + the button and get one of those sonic booms. It's actually a very common mechanic called charge partitioning.

Button mashers are easy to deal with. Just focus on punishing attacks, baiting and very fast moves. You don't need to focus on doing your flashy juggles all the time unless you punish happens to be a launcher.
>>
>>339588379
It's no fun because it's too easy to beat scrubs, i want a Challenger a decent player can offer.

>>339588426
Yeah that was pretty much it, if i tried to trick him into doing something or tried any strat then it would fall apart because everything was so random. At that point you can pretty much do low moves or punish everything because mashers don't know how to block or understand unsafe moves.

I'm decent at Smash, bad at every version of Street Fighter I've ever played, in Soul Calibur I'm terrifying as Astaroth but useless as anyone else, and I'm getting to be ok at pic related. Shigen Naoe is one of the most fun heavy characters I've ever played, he's a walking avalanche with claws.

Everyone should pick up Last Blade 2 now that it's on PSN. SFV is utter trash in comparison.

Pretty bad but I don't care since fighting games don't give me any insensitive to git gud, because they only matter in multiplayer.

>Good fighting game
>Popular with enough players
>Good netcode

Pick only 2 at best. Even if a game is good and as great netcode it doesn't make sense to learn it.
I won't fall for the local scene meme.

I'm really good at beat'em alls though. It's the superior fighting genre, real singleplayer games you can have fun with however you want for decades if you want. All fighting games should be BTAs.

Melee and 4. I won't touch Brawl these days; I was pissed enough that they fucked up ma boi Ganondorf, but the random tripping makes that game unplayable imo.

Speaking of Smash, Rivals of Aether is a fantastic example of the genre, and I'm not bad at that either.

Used to be 7k BP with Gief in USF4. Pretty high on the Hakan ladder too (but considering no one plays the character, not much of an achievement).
Currently 5,5k LP with Birdie in SF5.

Playing locals, I usually beat pretty much any other no-names. But I still get my ass handed over by guys that streams and attend big tournaments and stuff. Feels a bit frustrating, but I think I'll get there eventually.

I'm below the average skill on /v/ for sure, but I'm better than all my friends and none of them even like fighting games.

Unfortunately the scenes for literally all these games don't exist in Australia.

Got 25th at a stacked regional for Smash 4 back in January, I've only gone to local city tournaments since then.

Play one game, that many fighting games makes shit at all of them. Just be good at one or two of them.
>>
I understand the basics of a few games thoroughly. I know how footsies work, i know how mixups work, I can input most special moves, I can hit confirm well enough to land some useful combos, I know how to use fireballs, and how to deal with them, I know the difference between how you play SF and KoF, but I am not good. I have no real experience. I've only played against my sister, who isn't terribly impressive but occasionally does things right. Like she'll expertly jump over my fireballs, and then I'll beat her, and throw fireballs again, and then she gets hit by them twice before she actually manages to get in again, or she'll push me into the corner and take off half my health, then I'll throw her like 3 times, and finish her off with a jump-in combo. I'd get torn apart if I actually played with someone that knows what they're doing, but if the randoms that play popular fighters online are as bad as I hear then I could do pretty well against them.
>>
>>339594560

Is your sister hot?

I don't have good reactions or executions, but I know the importance of creating the setups, pokes, resets and I have well rehearsed high damage combos (which are not always execution dependent.) My best aspect is just experience, cause Ive been playing fighting games for more than 20 years, and despite all the frame data and information out there, most players still wanna jump even when you show them your on point antiair game, most people wanna rush you down when the timer is ending, and most people fall for simple mixups when they think they have the upper hand.

That's whats so great about fighting games: people can't help but show you their real self, if you push them to. Very few competitive games are so psychologically disarming.

Some people would say so. She has a feminine face, long hair that isn't in a special snowflake cut, and falls somewhere into the chubby/thicc spectrum. Furthermore she likes to lift weights, and aspires to have Chun Li legs.

Before you tell me to pursue her, I have no interest in that. I'm a christian, so I don't have much interest in sex, and I were to have sex I wouldn't have it with someone so closely related. Semi-Related question.

Is it better to practice, with a good character, or a bad one? Does having a variety of tools train you to use them better, or does having more limited options force you to get better at reads, and fundamentals? I ask because I really enjoy Alex in V, but he's really garbage, and I'm happy to stick with him, but I don't want to hamper my own advancement.

Quite a bit better then average, but nowhere even close to tournament level.

Skill in fighting games is kinda nuts, the different tiers in skill seem to be an exponential away from one another.

I can utterly destroy people a little less skilled then me, but people a little more skilled then me I get destroyed by.
Its understandable why it's a hard genre to get in to.

Oh shit
I had no idea.
>>
I'm better then the people in my friend group, but I'd still never get far in a tourney/ get stomped by any pro
>>
>>339599612
the ps3 of xrd outsold the ps4 version because of that.
>>
I used to be pretty good with Sonya in MK9. Played her since day one. Had a great win rate online.

Then I got wrecked by a tourney player in a lobby while he was playing Rain, Roundhouse cancels had me shitting my pants and I haven't played MK9 since.

Turns out I was meh at fighting games.

And yet people dont play it as much as they should because the name "capcom" isnt on the lable

Shows you how far brand recognition and nostalgia can take a company, capcom as well as EA are mistreating their customers at every turn.
But they still sell games because they have the rights to some beloved old franchises.

Xbone and Windows 10 store exclusives might exacerbate the issue.

I'm getting it on PS4 but I don't have console now. Gotta play it at my fighting comrade's place.

I'm pretty meh at most fighters, yet they're my favorite games to play. The only game I could say I'm good at is KI.

Me too. I thought I was blowing through the ranks way too fast, but that gap between gold and killer kept me nice and busy for a couple of weeks. Game is fun as fuck.

Post mains.

Like the idea of fighting games but having a hard time getting gud at it.
Tried skullgirls, injustice and mortal kombat but none of them really clicked.

Maybe I should just get a wii u with smash bros.

I'm so sorry you have it so hard

>>339602296

What is it you didn't like about them? Fighters can be vastly different in their gameplay, and it may take a few more until you find one that just clicks with you.

What's with the random selection of games?
>>
>>339602458
The characters take up too much of the screen, which can seem kind of paradoxial to pro players. Also why I think smash bros. might be better for me.

He's such a weird fit considering my usual taste in characters. But man, he is just too much god damn fun. Live and die by your hard reads.

Just a selection of games I've put the most time into and can play generally well. Main focus is SF4, KI and '98, though.

>The characters take up too much of the screen, which can seem kind of paradoxial to pro players

I think this is just an issue with your perspective to approaching the idea. Often times, fighting games incorporate just enough screen space to get things right. If characters were allowed to move any distance, (unless the game's design is better off that way, which is never exactly is,) then the multiplayer would arguably be pretty broken as you have way too much space to not be punished for backing up.

The restrictions 99% of fighters put on your screen movement is enough to keep things at a balance while allowing all sorts of necessary distance play, such as far, mid, and close range. Zoners are practically living evidence that you can still have enough space while fighting back.

It's objectively beneficial to game balance. It may be difficult for someone new at fighters or someone with the untrained eye to see, but in the end it's doing you and everyone else a favor.

Plus the game looks like a discount MK when in reality it is so, so much better.

At least the newer characters are working against that.

Fucking awful

I blame using the keyboard instead of fightstick

I plan to make a trip to serbia sometime in the next 2 years and buying a custom fightstick off a local. Then I'll have no excuse anymore

potemkin is fucking fun mate, too bad i suck at playing withthe ps4 analog so i oftenmiss his grab or his special moce, same with jhonny and all the otehr character is gg
>>
Not really good at all since I haven't played in years
I understand and watch the games often though
>>
I wish I was better.

I know my mental game will just improve with developing strategy and playing against opponents more but I lack the ability to execute the ideas I have during a match consistently because I need to practice my execution way more.
>>
>>339579920
I'm slightly above mediocrity
>>
>>339604302
Ah that's a shame. I don't like the half circle back forward input on the grab in general, really. I find 360s more comfortable.

I just love how it feels when your patience pays off. Oh god, there's nothing better. I think Heavenly Potemkin Buster might be my all time favourite fighting game super.

Incredibly mediocre, since I don't feel the joy of going to training mode and practice a list of combos, experimenting or read my opponent.

I also play it for the girls, as long as they look great then I'm sold.
>>
>>339579920
I can't really tell. Sometimes I play well and sometimes I play like shit. I seem to play better offline but I can't tell if that is because I know how my friends play or if it's just because of the lack of online lag. And there aren't any locals that I know of that aren't an hour drive or more. Might go to KiT this year to try my hand though.
