But a game that is 10/10 in story but doesn't have any gameplay can't even be called a game. It would be like a movie without moving images, music without sound, literature without text. The real art in a game comes from the gameplay. That is why the most historic games are those that have innovated gameplay genres.
Anyone who complains that the story is "yet again Bowser kidnapping Peach" doesn't get the point. It's a plot device to get you into the gameplay, and its continuous use should have clued you in that a good game doesn't need a story to be good.
I think that the people who take story really seriously in video games are the ones who want the medium to be appreciated by a widespread audience, by trying to convince them that video games can be art in the same way film and music can be art. But the difference here is that film and music are art for different reasons, and people need to realize that video games can be art for reasons exclusive to its medium.

I only realized how good it was after a friend and I began challenging each other to beat each other's time. In Sprint, you have to clear 40 lines as fast as you can, and my current record is somewhere around 1:37, compared to around 4+ minutes when I started, and there's still much room for improvement. The game just keeps matching you in skill, and it's about furthering your skill as a player.

There's nothing wrong with a video game story. It's when the story overrides the gameplay. For example, Last of Us. There's too many sections that are just you walking down a corridor while characters talk. To me this is an example of Story superseding gameplay.
