I wish revolvers were more viable
>>
>>339573948
Why aren't they valuable? 357 to mid-game, then 44, then hunting, then sequoia. Revolvers rely on alternate ammo types more than most weapons, but I think that makes them more interesting.
>>
>>339574148
because the hunting revolver and ranger sequoia animations are bugged and nothing truly fixes them
>>
>>339574148
*viable, of course.
>>
>>339574213
How so? I don't use the sequoia that much, but I use hunting revolver almost every playthrough.
>>
>>339573948
the sequoia is the best one handed gun in the game. when i do a playthrough with it, the only other weapon i need is chance's knife.

Nothing weak about the story just a lot of subtle details. Its full of symbolism and biblical references.

Like graham having a snakeskin belt and pistol detail for example. He's the serpent in Eden and in one ending he breaks the innocence of the sorrows. Pottery

I'm referring more to the fact that everything is very one-sided as far as decision-making goes.
Who could possibly side with Daniel, who whines when you fight, and if you leave peacefully, he regrets it? There's also not a lot of things to do differently in HH across multiple playthroughs, unlike DM and OWB.

My biggest gripe with FNV is I feel like the Legion was underdeveloped in terms of making them a viable choice. I know, they're immoral slavers who like to crucify people, but I would have liked to see more Legion based companions and some more quest lines. I basically have to rely on talks with Caesar and Ulysses about the Legion and that's it.

I know theres some mods that expand upon this, but none of them particularly satisfied me.
>>
>>339577258
Well you can't blanket reference that as bad story. It's unfinished and short and linear(although the world is open). Replayability is just bad because there's no fluff, so fucking reddit mess owb wins that.

But setting, writing and detail... also world aesthetics imo. There's no dead weight in HH, everything has soul even the loot. Loot in other dlc feels tacked on in comparison.

Here's a story that probably inspired part of HH. Link may be shit, didn't check but title is right.

That is a good point, I always enjoy hearing the thesis/anti-thesis/synthesis speech he gives. I guess I'm also dissatisfied that almost every human companion eventually becomes disillusioned with the courier on the Legion route, naturally, but I would have liked a more Legion sympathetic companion. It's my understanding Ulysses was originally designed to be that companion, but obviously that changed.

You don't need to know anything about Fallout 1 or 2 to enjoy New Vegas, but if you have played 1 and 2, you'll constantly run into direct and indirect references, and even some minor and major returning characters. Playing Fallout 3 doesn't matter because there are virtually no references because Bethesda's bad fanfiction isn't canon.

I recently ran into the old Enclave pilot who crashed the vertibird in the forest in Fallout 2
>>

But if you take into account how the npcs behave and talk, how ruined everything is, how you can still loot abandoned houses and businesses, how the metro tunnels aren't all flooded due to lack of constant maintenance, how dead all the vegetation is and how toxic the water is, it's pretty apparent that the nuclear holocaust happened last thursday. The green vomit filter fits that idea pretty well. It emphasizes how sick and dying the world is from such a recent catastrophe.

Wait... You're saying it was 200 years ago? That can't be, otherwise someone has made the whole world of the game completely wrong.

Fallout game with dual wielding when? They really shit the bed with Fo4, why do we live in a world where it's ok to use only one power fist instead of using two and going ham on some dudes?
Basically just let Obsidian take another crack at a Fallout game and give them enough time to add in as much as they possibly can.

Perhaps if the players are vocal enough to send their discontent to Bethesda they might give it a shot. Especially since ESO and Fo4 left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths.

Though i worry that Bethesda might soon join other AAA publishers in jamming their fingers in their ears and going "LALALALALALALA!" and the good writers at obsidian are gone.

those things don't contribute to the atmosphere, atmosphere is created by a combination of art direction and music. as far as western atmosphere goes, new vegas only has the music, and that's not even really western since most of it is from the 90's.

a few of the songs on mojave music/black mountain radio are from the 1990s. radio new vegas has mostly old songs but not the type you would expect to hear in a western setting. anyway, the game just doesn't hit the atmospheric nail on the head like fallout 3 does. which is to be expected, since they had less time to make it.

Perhaps you should actually reconsider your evaluation of the games and replay New Vegas. This 'atmosphere' that you speak of only exists on a surface level. It is the lights of a ballpark all lit up whilst the players reside in shadow - they are bereft and practically non-existent.

New Vegas, on the other hand, is brimming with nuance beyond its atmosphere. There are clearly defined trade routes, economic situations within each town, each location has a distinct environment and story device attatched to it that is presented beyond the flashing lights of 'atmosphere' - it all correlates to an overarching narrative and theme. Everything in New Vegas is meshed and sewn together to forge one larger entity, whilst everything in Fallout 3 is just a tacked on theme park full of rides about to fall off their hinges.
>>
>>339590450
Fallout's 3 flaw is that Bethesda succeeded on making the overworld feel empty and there is a sense of excitement at the start, but that fades in time and you realize that the game is really fucking empty.

Bereft of any context and reason. They even made some really fucktarded design decisions.
>Cave filled with children
Who makes the children?
>Said cave is right next to Vault 87 what the muties didn't took the children in cause their so puny?
>World so Irradiated that plants can't grow
Somehow pockets of civilization thrived.
>Megaton built around a bomb
They really neglected rational sense on that one due to the rule of cool.
>BoS, Enclave and Muties
They are just there to so that they can make a connection to the previous titles. There are no reason for them to be there. Given that the Muties are personally crafted by the master, The Enclave blown to bits and BoS going out of their way to help smelly locals. You can replace those factions with virtually anything else and nothing would change in the story.

i just gave two examples of locations with good atmosphere. if you like, i can go fetch my player's guide and list some more that aren't off the top of my head. and it's not just individual locations...when i play new vegas i instantly know exactly where i am at all times because the map is so small and condensed in comparison. in fallout 3, even after playing it for almost a decade i can still get lost in the wasteland.
>>
>>339590943
To reiterate, the atmosphere simply does not exist. The 'feeling' that you speak of is fleeting - it does not exist beyond its glimmer and shine.

Admittedly, to its credit, Fallout 3's original soundtrack does evoke some harrowing feelings, but that is it.

the amount of generic locations in that game is staggering, I feel like I could count the places with unique assets and effort put into them on my fingers. I wish they put more effort into the monuments as they are pretty shitty. With new vegas most locations really do feel unique but that extends to stuff like weapons as well, in fallout 3 unique weapons where just renamed with more dmg while new vegas had a special skin or unique model for every single one.

immersed is the best word i suppose. when i play new vegas i try to concentrate on the objectives, since there isn't anything particularly interesting on the map and no random encounters. in fallout 3 i put quests on hold for hours and sometimes days just to explore buildings and other miscellaneous areas that catch my eye. i have considerably less time in new vegas but i know the map better, which is odd to me, despite there being so many locations in the game there is really nothing there. and it just feels a little cheaper, even though the graphics look better they look worse at the same time, if that makes any sense.

Those points don't correlate
>>
>>339596734
i don't see why they don't. if you can start a quest in an area, talk to some people and end it without leaving the area, i think that is lazy. shouldn't even be called a quest, if there is no questing going on.
>>
>>339596913
Dependent on the type of quest, like G.I. Blues is very localized and wouldn't make much sense for it to span the entire map while Return to Sender it makes a lot of sense you end up going to the 4 corners of the Mojave.
>>
>>339597275
even return to sender has its flaw, in that nothing actually happens throughout the course of the quest until you reach camp golf. it's just "here, go to these places, talk to these people, and come back to tell me what they said." there wasn't anything like that in fallout 3, every quest had a tangible objective.
>>
>>339596913
>every quest has to have you trek across the map
new vegas had a ton a quest with large amounts of travel, having localized quests just in towns make things feel more alive and as if events actually are going on in these places, for example the quest where you tried to help the addicts on freeside give the place more character.
>>
>>339596913

They don't correlate, if the quest was something like this

>"Could you please convince my daughter to leave her dougebag boyfriend? he's a gangster and a bad influence for her"
>"Sure, where is she?"
>"She's 5000miles to the east "
>"Oh"
>Fast travel insues
>"hey, you, leave your boyfriend"
>"Yeah okay"
>Fast travel
>"There, it's done"
>"Thanks, here's 3 gold pieces"

>>

>>

It doesn't matter what something does irl. In Fallout there has always been either JHP and AP, or ball, HP and AP. The magnum rounds in NV are all just ball or HP. So you have to choose between barely armor penetrating and not armor penetrating rounds for revolvers. With shotguns you get everything from flechettes to electroshock ammo.

Speaking of magnums, why is it that there is no Desert Eagle .44 in New Vegas like there is in Fallout 1 and 2? That gun isn't Action Express. It uses standard .44 revolver ammo.

I been thinking about what you wrote for a while, i can't come up with a sizable number of quest that are just talking to a person that you can't just shoot your way out of it as last resort, or bribe them

It also made think if talking should count as gameplay, becouse in the previous fallouts and in NV, there are a lot of quest that can end peacefully if they had the right skill or inteligence to do so, and im kind of torn now

Does talking counts as gameplay?
