All Wii U's currently have a browser exploit that lets you run homebrew, which can launch games on an SD card.
Its not a permanent hack like the 3DS, you have to reapply the exploit every time you boot the Wii U, but its easy and pretty quick to do.
Just go and take the steps to make sure your Wii U can't system update any further.

Right now you can use homebrew in Wii Mode to run GC games natively. The Wii U's GC Controller Adapter works for it.
Can't get the actual Wii U controllers to work for it, but its close enough.

The load times seem to solely depend on how many files the game has to load, if the game is relatively small but has like 1000 tiny files it will take a while to load, Super Mario 3D World is an example, on the other hand #FE is a large game but the load times actually improve when loading from the SD.
