There's not much story, but basically garbage disposals and toasters decided they want to be people, and some of the characters are cool with it and others aren't, so they meet up in six on six battles to decide who gets the play of the game, but it always turns out to be some faggot tank robot that sits on his ass or an edgy Mexican that got a botched revive and can now walk through walls for 7 seconds. Also Widowmaker is pure sex.

Watched all of the shorts after I started playing the game because I wanted more backstory, but that one was pretty dumb.
Overwatch existed as a group of heroes a long time ago, but were disbanded after a major war.
Now overwatch needs to be reformed because of new wars and controversy, but many of the original members have turned to mercenary work that puts them in conflict with the new overwatch. Both sides have old and new recruits.
Is that right more or less?
Eventually they plan to release a hoard mode like TF2 did. Which might be fun to do with these heroes.

The story background allows people to identify with the different abstract roles as real characters with histories, identities and personalities, making the whole product more appeal to pick up and to continue with. Actually the bits about the Omnic Crisis were made up on the spot during production (akin to the plot in Warcraft 1), and later became core to the entire lore funny enough.
It's sad we won't get a singleplayer to explore the story, but I understand why they included it. It's like a fighting game story. You don't add it to tell an intense plot, you add it to add flavor to the game. Everything could just be untextured colored blobs with the exact same gameplay, but you can't deny adding flavor helps.

I have no problems with diversity in video game rosters when they use the backgrounds of said characters to make them interesting.
If you put a Brazilian in the game, make use of the culture to really make it interesting. People come from a very diverse background and environments. Devs should absolutely not be afraid to use them.
