Video game glitches really can get complex and weird. Look at half of the stuff fighting game players have found in their games. There are bound to be plenty of bizarre glitches out there that have yet to be discovered. It's just that Super Mario 64 has been so thoroughly studied by so many people for so long that there's a huge knowledge base for it.
>>
>>339571363
He used savestates and specific inputs to force specific RNG he wants. This can happen normally after 10 minutes but the chances are astronomically low

It's potentially useful in TASing, but not in real time gameplay. That's not the point though. He's not researching these things to find a practical use for it. He's researching it, first and foremost, because he thinks it's neat.

Yes he is, it's directly tied to reducing A-Presses. You can see this in the other video in which with perfect RNG he could get the stars the tower with much less presses than what he has to settle for now.

Because back then they could neither just shit out an unfinished version of the game under they guise "early access" and have customer beta test their game, nor could they patch up errors after the game was released without fabricating a new version of the game.
The later really only happend when errors were found and the game was then localized for another market. That's why there's sometimes glitches that only work in jp versions of games and are fixed in the english release.

It was a different time.

I don't know too well the situation with SM64, but OoT has relatively very few tool-assisted speedruns. Mostly because a lot of effort goes into making one and, as that goddamn game has proven time and time again, people still find new glitches or strategies to exploit every now and then, making it surprisingly likely that any longer TAS could well be outdated by the time it gets finished.

And yes that has already happened a few times

Imagine you want to take notes during a lecture, and would need a hundred pages to write down everything, but you have only ten sheets of paper. You would have to think of a system that massively shortens down information, but still being readable

The N64 had 4 megabytes of RAM, and most of it was used for rendering the actual visuals, so there was very little room for everything else

Glitches like HOLP and cloning are a direct result of this, the game can only render very few objects, and needed a system of what objects are allowed to be loaded and to what part of the memory. Modern games would never have an issue like this because they have a lot more room to just make a list of objects

Ah, okay. That does seem tough, unless he could make a Goomba bridge like I remember seeing on Bob-omb Battlefield (might go over item limit, though?)

>manipulating the RNG
How is this not cheating?
>>
>>339601284
He manipulates it using the dust particles from punching, not some external program.
>>
>>339601284
RNG in SM64 is determined by player input, so if you can do the same inputs every time, you'll get the same RNG every time. How could this be considered cheating by any stretch of the imagination?

Also, the goal is to do it with in game inputs, not to do it in real time as a human. Obviously it's tool assisted, but the challenge is only imposed within the context of tool assistance, so it doesn't matter. Nobody is claiming this can be done in real time.

This is actually really cool, but I hope this guy has a job where he's helping humanity advance in physics or CS or something not just just playing mario all damn day.

y'know, like we do, but we all know we'd have nothing to contribute to society anyway.

RNG hits the point for angle being 0, then the resonance reaction can start as this angle has that specific property.
>>
>>339603762
the vast majority of everyone alive will do nothing to improve the world

Really? He sounds so young.
>>
>>339603202
It is designed to switch directions AFTER it goes past 0 degrees (i.e. it won't switch AT 0)

After 10 minutes it lands exactly at 0, therefore it continues in it's current direction for one extra frame until it is past 0, then switches. That one extra frame of acceleration causes it to go higher than usual.

He then manipulates the RNG so it will always hit 0 on the backswing, so each swing gives it slightly more height while maintaining the boosts from the previous swings because the pendulum will always reach at least the height of the previous swing.

Maybe anon means he's a GTF?
Or he could have graduated high school at 16 like a lot of high-functioning autists.

I really hope everyone here doesn't think this guy, pannenkoek2012, isn't ACTUALLY autistic.

Autism is a neurological brain disorder which manifests symptoms in two primary ways and are mutually inclusive: communication and repetitive behavior. And, it's a specturm with varying degrees of affectation.
>But anon! This guy is playing the same game over and over and over again! There's no real value in that, it's just being repetitive! He has AUTISM!!
Well, he has a hobby, sure. To say this level of dedication is a sign of autism is possible, but only in the same way dedication to lifting weights, doing math, stacking cups, pistol shooting bullseye, driving 500 laps of Nascar for a living etc can be seen as signs of autism. So what's the other primary sign of autism? LACK of COMMUNICATION skills. Half of the 21 million or so diagnosed autistic people don't have enough verbal skills to even live alone, they can't tell other people their needs well enough to the point it literally kills them. A larger percent, which includes that group of LETHAL communication problems, don't have the linguistic savvy to express complicated thought, even if they themselves understand the concepts. Almost ALL people with any level of autism simply cannot even understand another human; they don't have the capacity to relate to their emotions or anticipate any reaction.
>Yeah! This guys is autistic: he just plays Mario all day and he sounds like a weird radio NERD!
And this is why you are so wrong about him being autistic. This guy is PHENOMENAL at relating his ideas to the public. Not just writing ideas and wording in BOTH complicated and simple methods to help others to understand with extreme literacy, he even speaks with incredible skill and confidence. He doesn't stutter, he doesn't use poor grammar, he doesn't flub words, he is so erudite that he cannot be misinterpreted. And he express this all comfortably and easily. The man is OPPOSITE of autism. He's charismatic.
>>
>>339603762
He entertains people, how is that not improving the world?
>>
>>339604223
>He doesn't stutter, he doesn't use poor grammar, he doesn't flub words,

You do understand the nature of recording allows multiple takes, do you not?

And his speech impediment is a telltale sign of legitimate diagnosable autism, not the meme kind
>>
>>339575578
I don't think there is anyone who said his videos were not interesting

but you simply cannot deny the autism
>>
>>339604223
Remember, you're on /v/ so
>>339603673
>>
>>339604223
Everyone calls the videos autistic in a meme sense but nobody actually really means it.

His videos are extremely impressive. I'm amazed that the takes apart and explains so clearly the mechanics of Mario 64. The only reason Watch For Rolling Rocks went viral is due to how absolutely absurd yet utterly fascinating it is that Super Mario 64 has multiple parallel universes in it. If he'd used any other phrase to describe it it might not have skyrocketed in popularity like it did.
>>
>>339604603
It's the terminology that does the magic, it's really just the game thinking Mario's coordinates are somewhere on the map when in reality he's way out of bounds, but calling it "Parallel Universes" makes it a lot more interesting
>>
>>339604603

THEY'RE NOT
FUCKING
PARALLEL
UNIVERSES

IT'S JUST THE COLLISION DATA LOOPING
THAT DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A 'PARALLEL UNIVERSE'
THE AUTISM COMES FROM HIS AUTISTIC NAMING OF THINGS AFTER METAPHORS RATHER THAN WHAT THEY LITERALLY ARE
>>
>>339604786
I'm pretty sure he didn't coin the term himself. It's just a nickname that arose when TASers found a way to utilize it as a mechanic.
>>
Cam someone explain why you would want him to stop.

Better yet. Why you would make a thread and give attention to something that you don't like?
>>
>>339605139
are you a literal autist? Because you've demonstrated your inability to detect figurative speech

"ahaha make him stop!" "You're killing me!" etc
>>
>>339603762
What you have done to "improve the world" besides being a shitposter?
>>
>>339604148
Hell, that upwarp could remove a bunch of presses out of TTC, and possibly reduce the time required on solved levels by a lot.
Considering we don't know how it works, it could well be usable and controllable on other levels.

>>339604223

He's transcended autism, like Ulillillia.

The operation is like the first thing you do when dividing in elementary when you did not have fraction yet, just that you call it "dividing with remainder" then. It the same operation you just learn that it is called "modulo" and the modulo IS the remainder.
The needed level to understand the operation itself is relly low though.
