PC owner here, what do console owners do if something inside a console breaks?

Since they don't sell individual parts for consoles, do you just throw the whole thing out?
>>
>>339567221
I haven't had any consoles break on me yet. My girlfriend left a disc inside her PS3 and left it in her car, upside down though. The adhesive on the disc melted and fucked up the whole drive. I took it apart and replaced it. It's a lot like swapping out PC parts, and you can buy most of the parts online. It's a bit of hassle disassembling and reassembling, but it's doable.
>>
Send it to Sony/MS/Nintendo for repairs.

Fees are extremely high.
>>
Buy a replacement part off eBay, Amazon, or Newegg, and fix it.

Just like PCs.
>>
send it in for repairs if you have a warranty and/or money
buy replacement parts off of eBay, newegg, amazon, yes they sell those
>>
Consoles rarely ever break, and if they do, they are usually within warranty or are just plain old and there's a newer one out.

My launch 60GB PS3 still works, my N64 still works and my SNES still does too.
>>
Consoles never break, unlike your "precious" PCs.
>>
There are places that fix them, they just frankenstein it. Most people just buy a new one though.
>>
If you take care of your consoles, you won't need to replace anything. The only console that ever broke on me was my PS3 which I had for 5 years.
>>
>>339567612

Didn't the 360 have something crazy like a greater than 50% failure rate?
>>
>>339567782
Some things can just break regradless of how well you take care of it.
>>
>>339567939
Yeah, 360s were pieces of shit. Don't think any other console has been near that bad.
>>
>>339567221
return to vendor, disregard console for the rest of the generation
see: red ring of death for the 360s, fucking Microsoft
no one here remembers RRODs however, because of the collective short-term memory inherent in this board
>>
>>339568039
I recall the PS2 having an absurdly high failure rate.
>>
modern electronics with a decent design rarely break. Unless it's made by Apple you will probably be fine. Although most companies threat consumers like subhumans while those with business stuff get treated fairly.
>>
>>339568127
The disc tray was a complete mess, that thing would fail all the time..
>>
>>339567221
>I've owned every Nintendo console, NES-Wii-U
>GBC, GBA, DS-lite
>PS1-4
>PSP
>Sega Genesis, Dreamcast
>Xbox, Xbox360

The only console I've had that's broken is my shitty Xbox360 because they have a hilariously high failure rate. My PS3 has had probably like 3000 hours played on it (launch model, 80gig) and it's still trucking.

My NES and SNES still work like new when I got them and they've no doubt had a few thousand hours each as well.

My PC's have always been way less reliable than consoles.
>>
>>339568039
didnt they fix it with the new models?
>>
I guess you would either send it off for free warranty repair, send it in for paid repair if it's out of warranty, or buy a new one. The only time I've ever had a console break on me though is the one time my 360 got the red ring.
>>
>>339567939
Are you kidding me, people already forgot about RRoD?

I bought X360 in 2008 and a year later it fucking red ringed on me. Used my warranty, got it fixed, broke again next month. Used warranty again and got my console replaced but at this point I was like "fuck this" and bought a PS3. Haven't touched my 360 since 2010.

Seriously, I have a SNES, PS1, PS2 and a slim PS3 and every single one of those consoles still work. Shit, the fucking SNES is older than me and I never had any problems with it.
>>
Depends. This is in the case of the PS3 here (I had nightmares with this heap of shit)
Hard drive replacement is easy town
Disc drive failure doesn't cause the whole system to fail, however (in the PS3's case anyway) if the disc drive is missing from the system itself the PS3 will refuse to update.
If the graphics or CPU is over heating you can reapply the thermal paste, it's not hard to do but it requires a lot of fucking effort it's like 20 screws or some shit.

I've never had something that's extremely important to the system outright break, though. But if it were to it would just be a case of resoldering and reballing it.
Which is way too much effort you mightaswell throw the thing out, consoles are designed to not really be opened up, although sony has always been alright with hard drive replacement.
>>
>>339567612
>My launch 60GB PS3 still works
That's pretty good luck right there. A lot of them have failed via YLOD. I had mine reflowed once or twice, and that helped it short term, but eventually the fat fucker just died permanently. Really sad day, that was.
>>
>>339568429
Yeah I bought a PS3 at launch after my 360 red ringed. I knew a guy who was working at gamestop at the time and he gave me full value for my red ringed 360 trade in and gave me some games 1-1 which was sick.

After the 360 fiasco, and Microsofts e3 I literally have no idea why anyone would even consider buying anything Xbox brand again.

That being said, brand loyalty is stupid. If Sony started fucking up Playstation badly I'd probably just stop modern gaming entirely.

All of my consoles are dead except my N64, that thing is going to live forever at this rate.
>>
>>339567221

If a PS4 breaks it's likely the cooling fan has failed or the power supply has failed. You can buy both of Ebay. The power supply is rediculously easy to replace. CPU fan less so. But you can buy basically part you need and with the right screwdriver you can disassemble a PS4 to its base components.
>>
>>339568087
Xbots have ALWAYS been delusional on this board when it comes to the failure rate, one anon I recall even said the whole RRoD was out of proportion and that his only broke twice.
but that just raises the question
what the fuck went so wrong where it would even break once let alone twice.

It wasn't until about 2010-2011 that sony started becoming more obnoxious than xbots and even then there was always shitflinging from both sides, nintendo was never really relevant in the whole thing, still aren't

Exchange it for a brand new console via my warranty. Or just fix it. But really, you should be exchanging it at the end of your warranty period either way so that you're always playing on a fresh machine.
>>
>>339568225
Disc trays are pointless technology. Prone to failure and totally unnecessary.

I wish every console would just adopt Sony's manual hatch from the PS3's 3rd model. That thing is such a good goddamned idea.
>>
I don't understand the deal with the Xbox 360 rrod, mine has got it twice I believe and all I did was unplug it and it works fine for the most part, the only thing that's fucked is that it doesn't read discs anymore
>>
>>339569335
There are many different error codes that the RROD could be popping up for. Sometimes it doesn't mean shit, you just unplug it, re-plug, and you're good to go. Sometimes it means put your mobo in the oven.

It's a check engine light.
>>
>>339569335
>and it works fine for the most part

?

guys as an owner of the newest xbox 360 model, should i be worried about that shit breaking down?
>>
>>339569496
No, it's just Sonygger shitposting to make you regret joining the XBox master race
>>
>>339569496
It plays downloaded games just fine but it takes hours for it to recognize a disc let alone read it, I should add that it's around 6 years old and that it is one of those fat white ones
>>
>>339569496

Microsoft pretty much got their shit together by the time the 360 Elite became a thing. The biggest failure rates were among the launch gen of 360s. The Arcades and Pros.
>>
>>339568429
maybe the older versions, nigger. I bought the new cheap slim version in 2011 and worked that shit hard and it still works today.

just that 7th gen hardware magic.
>>
>>339570115
Funnily enough my ps2 started shutting off randomly so I stopped playing it and put it away and after some time for some reason I decided to check if the problem got magically fixed and it did, it works perfectly again
>>

False you can get individual parts for consoles its how I gixed the Blu-ray drive on my ps3 slim.

>>
I never had a console break on me
The latch for the lid of my cousin's gamecube broke but they just left a book on top of it to hold it shut

I guess I have good luck with electronics. Only time a PC has been unsalvageable to me was when my first laptop melted its own hard drive.

I still don't understand why people outside of normalfags and small time gamers use consoles

PCs are cheaper, easier to use, has better exclusives, and has a better performance than consoles. There is no reason to own a PS4 this generation

You blast the component in question with a heat gun. Or shove the entire thing in the oven.

Even if it's a faulty capacitor.
Even if the components are not the type that could possibly be "fixed" by heat.

Somebody on the internet told you it was a good idea.

Yeah, it was just the first couple years they were god awful.

I've had the same 360 I bought used 5 years ago and still use it daily for netflix and the occasional game, same goes for my ps3. My gamecube and n64 are still working, and I can almost guarantee you that if I plugged in my old xbox right now it would work too. I'm a pc fanboy, but honestly most consoles other than a few bad years are bulletproof.

Worst case scenario, you can get a used 360/ps3 for basically 40$ now anyways.

Out of all the consoles i've owned(Nes, SNES, 64, Dreamcast, PS2, GC, Xbox, 360, PS3, Wii, WiiU) the only ones that have broken on my have been the PS2 and the 360.

On the case of the PS2 i bought a PS2 slim to replace the fat one, on the case of the 360 i brought it to some guy on a shady store to fix it, then when it broke again i threw it away and bought an Elite, which still works to this day.

this is why you get the no questions asked warranty stores offer you.

Alright guys, need some advice.

My PS4 was fucked up pretty bad physically when my roommate dropped it while we were moving it to the car about a month. Won't even turn on, the upper part of it is popping out of the base, with the components mangled. I don't have warrenty left on it because I got it as a gift around release and it has long since expired. Pic related

How much would it probably cost to get it fixed(if possible, I think it's beyond fucked)? Is there a way sony can send a free replacement? Living on college funds so I'm not too keen on spending a months worth of money on this.
>>
Over the last twenty years I had a Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, PSone, N64, Gamecube, PS2, DS Lite, PSP, Wii, PS3, Vita, 2DS, 3DS, Wii U, PS4 and including the one I am using right now 4 different PCs.
Three of those broke down.

Sega system issues
>Genesis/MegaDrive had too many fucking peripherals and models holy shit
>Saturn had high cost but not enough support as well as horrible marketting
>Dreamcast had piracy issues because of MIL-CD support and GD-ROM as the disc medium

Nintendo system issues

>Gamecube AV compatibility was fucking weird/200 dollar component cables, mini DVDs
>Wii main input being motion controls
>WiiU has spiders and poor sales due to marketing

Sony system issues
>PS1 had lens failure frequently
>PS2 had lens failure frequently
>PS3 had lens failure but not as frequently (YLOD, RSOD as well)
>PS4 has wobble and HDMI issues (i dont have one but whatever)

Microsoft system issues
>Xbox did pretty fuckin good im not gonna lie and i hate MS
>360 had RROD, shit quality parts, shitty lead-free solder (causing RROD), heat generated on Xenon and Zephyr boards plus X-clamp pressure bent and cracked boards, shitty capacitors (my pre2005 xenon devkit has 13 blown caps and its still alive somehow)

It never bricked on me. Currently using my PS4. I'm a little worried it might die from the amount of noise it makes. But so far I've had it since release.

I don't know what the fuck people do to their consoles. I have OCD when it comes to taking care of my shit. I dust it off and clean it. I've even gone as far as draping a cloth over it when I'm not playing so it doesn't get dusty.

Pretty much all consoles come wit a 1 or 2 year warranty, you can normally extend that in store for an extra fee.

After the warranty has expired you can either pay Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft to fix it or you can just fix it yourself.

It's just like repairing a computer, there's plenty of guides on youtube and shit. The only difference is it can be a pain in the ass to open the cases and you often need special screwdrivers and shit. Unlike custom built PC's, they're not designed to be opened and tinkered with easily.

>planned obsolescence

They do that with PC parts, not consoles.

With a PC you don't really have any reason to upgrade unless you want better performance so companies gimp the fuck out of their hardware or pay developers to optimize their games for their newest video cards.

They don't need to do that for consoles, all they have to say is "we're not making games for this anymore" or "we're not supporting this with updates anymore" so you buy the new hardware if you want to play the new games. They don't need to stop your old hardware from working, they just need to stop making games for it.
>>
>>339573862
>better exclusives

Is this what PC gamers actually believe? The best thing about PCs is being ale to play games at a higher res than 1080p and a higher framerate than 30 or 60. There isn't exactly a great deal of exclusives that are actually worth owning.

PCs are god tier for multiplats, they're dedicated multiplat machines.

Before anybody spergs out, I'm not saying there aren't any exclusives on PC because there obviously is, I just bought Total War Warhammer and it's great but wondering why people buy consoles is just retarded, it's obvious, the exclusives are consistently better.

If you like JRPGs especially, there is literally no reason not to own a PS4 and a PC if you can afford it.

The only pointless console this gen is the Xbox One since 90% of its exclusives are going to PC anyway. Give it a couple of years and they'll make a cash grab by dropping the Halo series on PC. Sony and Nintendo don't do that.
