/lit/ inhabitant here, I wanted to ask you guys for help. I'm looking for some games that truly make you feel like an adventurer, an explorer. Something like Blood Meridian where I can ride out across the American plains in the 19th century
Or Heart of Darkness where I can explore a dark and foreign jungle
Preferably first person, hopefully pretty looking. Something minimal and simple too. Combat optional.

I've really enjoyed that game Salt if it helps.

Might I suggest the Penumbra series?

The first one has a good story but some forced combat. The second one removed this badly implemented mechanic, so it was pretty damn good. The last one in the series is just puzzles and a bit of more story for fun.

Everyone here is being a shithead but Fallout New Vegas is what you are looking for.

There is lore everywhere from NPC's to terminals to journals. Each settlement/faction has their own history and most are connected to one another in many ways. You travel across the desert and can truly roleplay as a revolver-wielding cowboy with a duster jacket and a cowboy hat. You choose the destiny of many different factions and learn a lot from each one you become into contact with. I've played through 8-9 times and still find new things. You feel like you are in a post-post apocalyptic Mojave Desert and it's a great Westerner game.

The DLC is excellent for lore, specifically Old World Blues which places you in an exaggerated 50's science fiction setting with very humorous and clever writing. Honest Hearts would be perfect for you in terms of DLC and what you want. You walk around the canyons of Zion and learn about the tribes in the area and impact their conflict. It has one of New Vegas's most interested characters (Joshua Graham aka the Burned Man), and there is a story of a survivor of the apocalypse that has VERY amazing writing. You find the survivor's journals all over and they are extremely recommended to be read. The other DLC can strike some interest in you, as they shouldn't be ignored either (Lonesome Road is hit or miss)

The game is first person and can be switched to third person if you ever want to do something as simple as looking at your boss of a character. There can also be mods for you to lookup that can add plenty of content to the game if you ever want more.

FarCry 2 and Spec Ops: The Line are based on Heart of Darkness, and imo they're pretty good. FarCry 2 is meant to embody the dark and foreign jungle: the graphics are technically dated, but I haven't experienced anything that's conveyed that same kind of mood.

I'm reading Finnegans Wake now and loving it. I'm not spending all my time with easier stuff like Conrad, but it's important to realize how innovative and influential he was.

Well for 1, the context of the conversation is that the woman is asking if he read it. His reply to the question suggest that he's reminiscent of the time he did read it. So you can infer from that, that he is remembering a book he read when he was younger. Likely when he was still in high school or younger.
Also, the question is being asked by a couple of shallow broads. To them, gatsby is intellectual reading, and thus a measure of the man.
Because he's so well read, he can easily talk about issues that are relevant to others, thus having a greater social life. Instead of only knowing a niche isolating hobby.

people on /v/ hate open world or at least would not consider it a priority when considering a game, so be prepared to get a lot of reccomendations of games that have good or decent gameplay and a lackluster open world with mediocre exploration.

I would recommend getting arma 3 and playing the breaking point mod if it's still active if you have the specs for it. arma 3 is fucking gorgeous maxed out and breaking point has good ambient music that fits so well with just running around a big ass island.

if you are looking for amazing exploration and points of interest in a beautiful open world with an amazing expansive story and mediocre gameplay then I would recommend the witcher 3.

and if you are looking for decent gameplay with decent exploration in a fairly nice looking open world I would recommend far cry 3 or 4, they are casual as fuck also so you can just jump right on in without needing to know nothing.

and I would also recommend staying away from bethesda games, if you insist on trying out a gamebryo or creation engine game try new vegas, at least it has decent dialogue and characters; and mod the fuck out of it or you're probably not going to have a good time.

I feel like I might be forgetting something but this is my personal two cents and does not reflect the majority on /v/ thank fuck.

What are some good cyberpunk books(if there are any)? I've heard neuromancer mentioned and some anon posted a couple excerpts from a book about a cyberpunk pizza delivery guy. I'll also take recs for other books that would appeal to a video game player, fiction or non-fiction. Last book I read was masters of doom.

Snow Crash. fucking stellar. deals in large part with surfing the internet in VR. there's a group of outcasts that walk around wearing basically oculus rifts with webcams and minicomputers strapped to their bodies, staying online 24/7. ever since the OR and vive etc became a reality, I have wanted to become on of those freaks.
Diamond Age is another great read by the same author, except instead of 'near future dystopian tech wasteland' it's 'far distant future mostly stable tech reality that is completely fucking alien due to progress'.

Yeah you're a fag, it was exactly the presence of some minimal combat mechanics that made Penumbra good.
It was risky and ineffective, but it was there as a last resort. It wasn't always obvious if you should run from enemies, hide or try to take them on.
Amnesia was significantly less scary because no matter what enemies you encountered, you always knew that there'd be some conveniently placed wardrobe or a door you can shut behind yourself, since every room had to have a solution where where you can avoid contact with entirely.
>>

you are not 4chan, but generally yes 4chan is contrarian to whatever it previously espoused.

/fit/ used to be about olympic lifts, keto, no cardio, and now it just shits on all of that to some extent

/b/ used to be about teen selfshots and not it's MODS

/tv/ used to be about patrician, niche, art house, independent, and now it's all mcu big guy porn

/v/ used to be PC, technology and complexity, now it's all ps4, ..the..power..of.., and casualism

/pol/new/ used to be polsci, ron paul and a sprinkle of nazi, now it's full on nationalism, race bait, /r9k/ bait, /b/ tier shit(oh my god baby and gorilla and celebs, bathrooms and some other not politics that is spammed on cnn), porn, and anything else you could think to constantly flood a catalog.

and /soc/ used to be /r9k/ and /r9k/ used to be the real /b/

I don't think that the general discourse on 4chan is always organic and it maybe that it isn't contrarian or pendulum effect but every board has done... well they've gone to shit.

Big Bad and Dragon is a term from tabletop or video games where the Dragon is the visible threat the party has to overcome but then they see that the Dragon was just the right hand of a bigger threat, The Big Bad.
There roles are a bit twisted in NV because you won't see Lanius until the end but the Big Bad in the 2nd act. The Legion's structure however is that Lanius is the "field operator" and Caesar the figurehead.

No mans sky is a game only abo it exploration. Of you really get off to just exploration that may be for you, but from what I know it's nothing other than exploration. Other than that I'd suggest just looking through some Bethesda titles like fallout and skyrim. Combat is really easy and it's pretty much about going through the world.
