Vile's entire motivation for Maverick Hunter X is to piss on X because he can't stand everybody gushing over how X is destined to uplift the entire Reploid race, especially Sigma.
As far as we see, there is no virus in the Maverick Hunter X canon, reploids go maverick for their beliefs.
His edge is palpable as he runs around killing all the rebelling reploids for no reason other than to make them stop talking about X.
But he's so lovable doing it. He just wants to be acknowledged.

Darth Vader and Palpatine are corny. But corny villains can work within the framework of a hero story. You root for the hero, not the villain. So it's acceptable if the villain is merely a motive for the hero to fight.
That's how it is with Mega Man X. X and zero are worth rooting for. So it's ok if Vile and Sigma are just edgy villains. But if they're going to make a Vile game, then they're going to have to give me a reason to give a fuck about Vile. Somehow I doubt they will.

Why are X and Zero considered such amazing reploids when it took their combined efforts to bring down Vile in MMX?
I mean if a simple robo-walker is enough to bring Vile to the level that neither X nor Zero can beat him without Zero self destructing, why not just mass produce the walkers? They're more effective machinery than X or Zero are.

X by the time of Xteme 1 is able to destroy a data recreation of X1 VIle who's using his ride armor WHILE he's riding his ride armor, and X himself doesn't have anything.
X was strong enough to destroy Vile's ride armors in X3.
We see bits of how strong truly is in X5, when he's infected with enough he can't take damage from anything, and if you wait long enough in the fight with his awakened self he will do 1 hit kill attacks. Sigma also implies this he isn't even at his full potential.
