Higher refresh rate = higher maximum fps
a 60hz monitor = 60 fps max
75hz monitor = 75 fps max
it might not sound like it makes a difference, but the difference between 120 fps and 60 fps is as noticeable as the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps (though you are unlikely to be able to overclock a 60hz monitor to 120hz)

I've been running my 'stock' 60hz 1440p IPS panel @ 96hz for almost 2 years now. I could go as high as 120hz, but I don't want to fuck with EDID timings, or potential loss of color accuracy.
1440p at 96hz is pretty glorious though.

i have a shitty monitor and i've been running 75hz for over two years now.
the dead pixel it had when i bought it is still the only dead pixel it has.
everything else is also still normal.
my dell says optimal resolution is 900p 60fps, but can go up to 75fps
most monitors can do this, but it may wear it out faster
