Might have been the whole concept of multiplayer with destructible massive ships being the bases. Options for gunners, places for engineers to fix, the ability to invade enemy hangers with saboteurs, etc.
I liked the idea of the inner workings of each ship being affected by damage on the outside, and vice versa. Whether it's just nostalgia goggles or not, I wanted to see the potential of expanding upon the idea, not scrapping it completely.
