Is there seriously any reason left to keep buying AMD cards?
>>
>>339518678
>http://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-480-polaris-10-graphics-card-leak/
the reason has and continues to be performance for price
>>
The article [and it should be noted that this website is a sandnigger clickbait site that will run literally anything and is about half a notch above Dual Pixels] states:
>5.5 TFLOPS
>Maybe $199 price
If that's true and Xbox Scorpio is real, there's the GPU it'll be based on.
>>
>>339519750
you mean PS4 Neo right?
>>
>>339518678
>rumor websites
that being said polaris isn't meant to compete at top end, while it's claimed to be comparable to previous gen top end, it's not AMDs new top end cards.
Polaris is more about the consumer market and having something really power efficient to go into laptops, amd wants to seize back some of the market. Not to mention they want to ensure Apple GPU contracts for upcoming products.
>>
>>339518678
>5.5 TFLOPS
>110-135W
>$200-$250 USD launch price
looks like a beast for overclocking
>>
>>339519929

Neo is rumored around 4 tflops so no

It's also coming out earlier and this card is brand new so sony wouldn't put it in
>>
>>339519929
Supposedly PS4 Neo is targeting ~4 TFLOPS, not ~6 [again RUMORED for Xbox Scorpio]. I'm sure they could both be based on Polaris arch, but 5.5 would put it right in the wheelhouse of ~6 TFLOPS.

AMD on suicide watch, holy shit. They've just given up competing with high end cards.

ya if i dont to spend $800 on a 1070 +400 on a new monitor for 1440

i will be on 1080p 144hz for a few years yet

and if the 480/490 can let me max out 1080p at 144 FPS and be cheaper than i have no reason to switch

if you have the money i can see why people would never buy AMD anymore

Polaris was always intended to be a mainstream chipset that went from the upper mid down to low end cards.

Later in the year they are releasing their performance chipset "Vega" which will be their enthusiast part. Personally the 480 looks good enough for me though.

The 290X is a really beastly card. It will compete with 980 ti more often in the future. It already beats it in some DX12 games like AshesOfSingularity/Hitman.

Huh. That thing's direct competition used to be the 780 non-Ti. As far as I'm concerned it's big enough of a feat that it's consistently beating the 780 Ti nowadays.
>>
>>339536202

>>
>>339535848

I have a 290x XF and even at 1440 it has more than enough power to last for at least 2 or 3 more years.

>>
>>339536365
Sounds like one to me but I'm waiting for a Sapphire Nitro 490, or any 490 if the temps aren't batshit like the 390's were.
>>
>>339518678

I don't know. But here's another question: Why does the thought of an Nvidia monopoly make you happy? Aren't you aware that prices would skyrocket while quality plummets? Competition is good for everyone; even if you're never going to buy an AMD card in your life, you should want AMD to stay in business.

Sometimes I actually think everyone on /v/ is a legit retard.
>>
>>339535113
A price gladly paid
>>
>>339518678
>Is there seriously any reason left to keep buying AMD cards?
Because of things like>>339536038

AMD cards get better with age. At the time you purchase them they are more than likely going to be lacking when compared to Nvidia. I own a 7970 and that card was a very worth while investment. I still use the card today, at 1080 the card still preforms well. If Nvidia could do the same wizardry AMD does I wouldn't mind going with team green.
>>
>>339536365
$199-$230 is the range for AMD's midrange (probably 480 and 480x)

Polaris 11 is either 470 or 460, which goes for $100-$150
>>
>>339536990
Does AMD tend to release the "x" versions of their cards at the same time as the regular versions or will we have to wait.
>>
>>339537162
They don't release them at same time. Usually there's couple of months in between.
>>
I'm betting $250

I'm curious to see where the cards stand by fall. The GTX1070 is likely to go up in price
>>
>>339537162
It's irregular. For example, the 380X released 5 months after the 380, but the 390X and 390 released simultaneously (in some countries the 390X made it first by a couple days to a couple of weeks even).

Assuming the leaks are true and the RX 480 is the cut-down 2304 SP version that we know exists, the 480X would most likely then be the full Polaris 10 chip with 2560 SPs. Their availability is probably entirely up to chip yields, and may require for the 14nm manufacturing process to mature. It's possible, though highly unlikely, that we see a 480X released alongside the 480. There's probably going to be a gap of several months between them.
>>
>>339536990
yes, but this time there's no x90 parts and fury/fury X are a lot more expensive, so they should have a lot more room to increase the price. 970 is still at $300+.
>>
Was there a point to the Fury line? A 290x can compete and even beat the 980ti on certain games so why would you ever buy a Fury card?
>>
>AMD
into the trash
>>
>>339538026
There's Vega 10 and Vega 11.

So those will be Fury replacement and X90 replacement.

AMD wants to make VR more accessible to people with lower income? That's awesome. Say what you want but that's fairness for people living in "first world" countries who want to keep up with the latest technological trends. This is just like the internet. Just like how you can't find a household with an internet connection, I guarantee you that every house will have a VR setup by 2020. Good on AMD for making it happen.

>>
>>339541452

>>
>>339538352
Fury was mostly a platform for experimental tech as far as I know. AMD had HBM1 in the pipelines and needed to slap it onto a card to see what happens.

Fury was also the high-end offering of their newer GCN 1.2 architecture. The 390X and the 390 are based on 1.1 and as we know, they're basically just the R9 200 cards from 2013 with double the memory and a big factory overclock slapped on, resulting in problems with heat and power consumption (from which the 290X already suffered anyway).

Apparently when the 20nm process for GPUs fell through, Nvidia got the news first and knew to stick with the 28nm process, while AMD pretty much went down with their 20nm ship. When Nvidia's Maxwell released and was noted to be excellent, AMD had to scrounge up something to appear competitive. Thus the 390 and the 390X.

Fury offered a more sensible power draw and heat profile. It was what AMD needed, but it arrived very late and its price was hugely inflated by the HBM1 it used (which could also only stack up to 4GB).

Basically, the Fury was mostly a misstep. They had to put it up against the 980 Ti because they couldn't bring its price down, but it just wasn't competitive most of the time. Still, at least the Fury Nano is a wonderfully powerful small form factor card, unique and unbeaten in its role.
>>
>>339541120
There's no custom 1080 NOW nor the 1080ti. So I don't get what the point is.

to be more PROFITABLE. that's a pretty tempting proposition for a company that's been in the negative for the past 3 or 4 years.
>>
>>339536429
Titan, actually. 290 non-X was better than 780, 290X was better than Titan, and then Nvidia responded with the 780ti and Titan Black.
>>
$200 is fucking amazing for what it is

Can't wait for benchmarks
>>
>>339541262
If that power draw holds true, it'll be able to get all its juice from the PCI-E connection, no PSU connector required. That's nuts for a card that's been shown to run Battlefront at 1080/60 on medium (assuming this is the very same Polaris 11 that was demoed a while back).
>>
>>339518678
That sucks!
I was hoping on amd having a card that would at least be close to competing with the 1070/1080. Now it looks like they're in entirely separate markets. Nothing to encourage nvidia to keep it's prices reasonable.

A- Get loyal consumers with good prices and support.
B- Make them buy often.

AMD is at stage A, NVIDIA is at stage B, no magic or wizardy, no one is being nicer or more evil, it's literally business 101, I'm serious, it's called planned obsolescence, and there are many many ways to implement it, and some ways have been regulated in Europe, it's necessary for producers to maintain their level of revenue when the market is over saturated, you can find it in any business class curriculum.

It's hilarious that some fans are disregarding it AMD propaganda, just comes to show how ignorant the gaming crowd is, which is to be expected among man-childs.
